Biography

Biography by Bruce Eder & Geoff Orens

Genesis keyboardist Tony Banks has made several stabs at a solo career since 1978, writing and recording in various styles and occasionally under different group names. However, none of his attempts have been very commercially successful, a sore point for the man many deem responsible for a large portion of the Genesis sound. For many observers, Banks is one of… Read more in Amazon's Tony Banks Store

I'm amazed that there has not been a review posted on this remasterd masterpiece by TB since it's release not long ago. I received the CD today (purchased through Amazon) and am listening to it right now on a the small Bose wave CD player (I'll play it on my main system later). Being extremely familiar with the original release of ACF from many years ago I am hearing sounds, nuances and patterns I have never heard before. The title track is absolutely stunning Anything I could say here wouldn't even come close to describing it. I haven't gotten to the 5.1 disc or promo films on the second disc as I wanted to get this review out right away. Give it up, pay the dough and BUY THIS DISC!!!!

It comes in a gatefold or book format that is binded on the end. Both the front and back cover have a glossy finish. The liner notes are written by TB and provide some insight into what was going on at the time of the recording. There are several pictures of Kim Beacon and Chester Thompson. Sadly Kim passed away shortly before the remastering project began.

One can only hope that TB will move forward and consider giving the same treatment to his subsequent releases.

In closing,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,BUY THIS DISC!!!

11/22/09-The stereo version is only surpassed by the 5.1. Also good to have a visual of TB and Kim B. Thanks for the early Christmas present.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genesis' keyboard master's solo debut gets 30th anniversary issue fit for a king!, November 22, 2009

Genesis keyboard player Tony Banks released his first solo album entitled A Curious Feeling in October of 1979.
The A Curious Feeling album came about what turned out to be an unexpected break for the band Genesis. This came to pass after lead singer/drummer Phil Collins' first marriage literally crumbled. Whilst Phil tried to salvage his marriage and couldn't, Banks and Genesis guitarist/bass player Mike Rutherford each went off and recorded their first solo albums.
A Curious Feeling came out four months before Rutherford's Smallcreep's Day (released in February of 1980). Like Rutherford's album, Banks had used producer/engineer David Hentschel (and Banks co-produces here) and recorded it at ABBA's Polar Studios in Stockholm, Sweden. However, unlike Rutherford's album, Tony handled all of the bass guitar, keyboards and guitar parts and very well I may add. Banks is joined by Genesis' longtime touring drummer (the ever wonderful) Chester Thompson and singer Kim Beacon handles all of the vocals here.
This is a great solo debut for Banks and, of all his solo albums, A Curious Feeling is the most progressive-rock sounding and the most like vintage Genesis-sounding of all of Banks' solo efforts.
Tony delivers eleven superb tracks at over fifty minutes and has three instrumentals (the stellar opening "From The Undertow", the exquisite epic "Forever Morning" and the truly gorgeous "Waters Of Lethe").
There are also great melodic and nice pieces like the classic "Lucky Me" and the superb title cut (the song that sent me looking for the album in the first place).
There's also brilliant progressive tracks like the powerful "Somebody Else's Dream" and the album's centerpiece by a longshot called "You" which begins as a ballad before seguing into a Genesis-style instrumental break that hits you in the heart.
The tracks "The Lie" and "After the Lie" is to be played as one piece and a great two-part epic. The closing one-two punch of "For a While" (which was released as a single and sadly went nowhere but a great song) and "In the Dark" which are all stellar numbers as well.
A Curious Feeling (like the solo albums from Rutherford, ex-Genesis bandmates Steve Hackett and Anthony Phillips before him) failed to make an impact when released peaking in the lower rungs of the Billboard 200 but a great album NEVERTHELESS regardless of sales and so forth!
Now in 2009, the independent record label Esoteric has re-released the album in two different versions for its 30th Anniversary. One is a newly remixed/remastered CD version (painstakingly remixed by longtime Genesis co-producer/engineer Nick Davis) in a normal jewel case with a slipcase and excellent booklet which explains how the album was made and new interviews with Tony about the album's creatiopn. Plus he mentioned that singer Kim Beacon passed away shortly before the album was being remixed and remastered. The second re-issue is packaged in a book sleeve with the CD plus the DVD in 5.1 and the videos for "For a While" and "Waters of Lethe". This re-issue of A Curious Feeling is a great new look at a classic solo debut and is also a fitting elegy to Kim Beacon (and this reissue is dedicated in his memory).
RECOMMENDED!

Simply put, this is one of the most achingly beautiful and unforgettable album ever recorded by anyone. Especially, the instrumentals are just... beyond any words I can find to describe them.
This limited edition is a piece of art in its own right.
Mr. Tony Banks, thank you very much. Any chance for something even cose to this perfection in the future, please ?
