Really great way to introduce reading "painlessly",

My preschooler loves the character and the stories. Our daily readings are something he looks forward to and he is retaining the skills, and starting to generalize learned words to other books. I can't give a better endorsement than, he is learning to read with this series.

I bought this for my 1st grader to encourage her to read. This is not a good set for learning how to read. The difficulty doesn't build up or doesn't even match to what it said it teaches. It's too advanced for very beginners, but too simple once the kid learns to read words used in these books. It's ok when a child can read some pages, then parent can read others. However, that takes away the joy of accomplishment, joy of reading the whole book on their own!
Here is an example: Book 2 says it teaches short e as in rest and b as in bike. Short e and just the sound b are really really beginner reader skills, but this book has hardly any simple words using those sounds. Instead here is a sentence on 4th page: "Presents are the best kind of surprise." LOL if my kid needs to practice letter b sound still, how in a world is she going to read the word surprise!!!!???? My kids love curious George, and they like these books. However, I bought them for educational purposes, and I wanted my dd to read them on her own. This turned out to be a set of very low quality that I red to her. I would much rather read regular Curious George books to her if I am the reader :( Kids would give this set 3 stars since they liked me to read those books to them. However I give it 1 star because it does not serve the purpose it was made to serve: help kids learn to read when they are still beginners.

My son LOVES Curious George so these readers were a great choice for us. There are 12 books that all focus on a diferent sound. They are great to practic phonics at home or to use when developing your own program. My son LOVES the simple stores and classic illustrations. What a great value for 12 readers!!

I saw this set in a kindergarten classroom and mentioned it to my 5 year old at home. He loves Curious George and couldn't wait for the books to come in the mail. He had to read each book in order. Yes, there are hard words, but they fit the story and many times can be decoded using picture clues, sounding out word parts, or an adult just giving the child the word and allowing them to repeat it. He was interested in the stories and that is what spurs a child to read. So, if your kiddo loves Curious George and you don't mind a few hard words here and there, then by all means, this is a set of books for your home.

Uninteresting, short, and no skill buildup,

I didn't realize that these books would be so short. Each page has a picture on one side and a simple sentence on the other. You turn 7 pages, and you're done with the book. Now this might not be so bad for a book that a young child could read. However, as other reviewers mentioned, the words used in the book are not anywhere near simple enough for my daughter who's learning to read. There's not enough buildup of simple principles both within a single book, and between books in the series.
So you might think that all that's fine if your kid loves Curious George, and you can read it with them. (Despite the fact that there's a "learn-to-read program" label on the front). But like I said, they're really short, and because of that, there's no buildup of a story, which leaves them uninteresting.

I bought this based on other reviews. Someone said this is a good set of books for kids who love Curious George, which describes my son. He is 3 years old and loves Curious George and anyone in real life that is named George. Really all because of this little monkey!! So, we got the books and I opened them and showed him Book 1: "Curious George is Happy." The sentences are basic with a few more complicated sentences thrown in. This book starts with "George is happy;" and ends with "Sometimes George is so happy that he has to dance." I read the book to him and asked what he wanted to do. He said "I want to read." So off he went with Curious George and I heard him "reading." "Curious George happy...." He has really gotten into these books and doesn't put them down except to sleep.
To be honest, he plays reading games online and I was looking for an engaging (to him) set of books to help connect the dots: reading happens offline, too. He is active and no doubt this set of books has him heading in the right direction. For an adult, these books are repetitious and short, but that is exactly what a beginning reader needs. I give this set an A++. I am very happy with my purchase.

Bob Books are better for beginning readers,

I've read other reviews that say the Curious George books are too advanced for beginning readers. I'm a pre-primary teacher and we use the Bob Books for our children. Our children LOVE the Bob Books - they are short and simple, starting with "Mat". Simple sentences such as, "Mat sat on Sam". Each subsequent book builds a little on the one before it. There are 5 sets of Bob Books (48 books total) and by the time your child finishes the last one they are ready for beginning or intermediate chapter books. (We start out teaching letter sounds in a fun way and once the letter sounds are mastered move on to blending sounds together using the Bob Books.) As a teacher, I highly recommend Bob Books for any beginning reader.

This set could have been better. Too advanced for beginner reader. The stories don't have a plot either. I can't interest my son in this at all yet and he LOVES curious george books.

I gave this book set to my 3 year old grandson for Christmas. He loves all things Curious George. There are 12 booklets with simple sentences. He loved them and I can see him reading some of them sooner than later. They are perfect for pre readers and he loved walking around the house with the books in the carrying case with its handle.

This review is from: Curious George Is Happy (Book 1 of 12 Book Set) (Margret and H.a. Rey's Curious George) (Kindle Edition)
This is a very short, single book. It is not the series. There is no parents guide, as stated. It is practically worthless as delivered to kindle. I can imagine that the print set is very good. Were the kindle version more complete, it could be worthwhile. I bought this and returned it.
