4.0 out of 5 stars B-Day Goody Bag Books
These were used as favors for my son's 5th birthday party. I added a little sticker inside to thank everyone for coming. It's a great story, a familiar and cuious monkey and it even includes some fun games in the back. Many parents thanked me for encouraging their kids to read and most of all for not giving junk and candy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Art, Lame Story
We own about 24 Curious George books, including the originals and a hard-cover box set by Vipah. Martha Weston does an admirable job with the artwork, capturing the flavor and style of the originals by H. A. Rey, with creative layouts and pretty full-page spreads. However, the story she was saddled with - just terrible. Start with an awkward scene jump as you turn to...

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun story, perfect for reading at birthday parties!, October 2, 2007
This review is from: Curious George and the Birthday Surprise (Paperback)
The Curious George series of books is a wonderful addition to any youngster's library as the stories are brief, beautifully illustrated in vibrant colors, and the plot is simple and easy for young ones to understand. In this book, Curious George gets all excited over a birthday party, and wonders who its for? There are many fun parts as in when George decides to help frost the cake, and what he does with a mess in the kitchen. The activities at the end of the book is an added bonus. A must-have for any Curious George fan!

5.0 out of 5 stars How can you go wrong with Curious George?, March 2, 2006

This review is from: Curious George and the Birthday Surprise (Paperback)
I bought this book to use as favors for my children's birthday party. The party was taking their cousins/friends to see the movie Curious George. It's a very cute book and Curious George's curiousity doesn't get him in too much trouble. It shows all the things that the man in the yellow hat does to prepare for a surprise party for George. It's great to see my children (3 and 5) enjoying book characters that I enjoyed as a child.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kinda Gross...But Amusing, July 20, 2006
This review is from: Curious George and the Birthday Surprise (Paperback)
At breakfast, The Man with the Yellow Hat tells George that he has a surprise planned and lots to do to get ready. "You can help me by staying out of trouble" says the man. George is happy to help, but you know how curious George can be...

George ends up finding noisemakers, ballons, hats, streamers, and games...he couldn't resist playing with them! He then "decorated" the living room (yikes!) and works his way into the kitchen--where he spots a chocolate cake that is cooling.

He had seen his friend make frosting before, and decides to "help" him by making frosting. Needless to say, he makes a major mess! So how does he clean up? He gets the neighborhood dogs to lick off the mess on the sink, counters, and floor. (Ewww!)

The Man is none the wiser as he comes in from outside. He was purchasing coconut ice cream from the ice cream man, you see.

There was a surprise all right...can you guess whose birthday it is?

A frolicking tale in the spirit of the Rey books, children will no doubt be delighted with the antics in Curious George and the Birthday Surprise.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Art, Lame Story, April 20, 2011

We own about 24 Curious George books, including the originals and a hard-cover box set by Vipah. Martha Weston does an admirable job with the artwork, capturing the flavor and style of the originals by H. A. Rey, with creative layouts and pretty full-page spreads. However, the story she was saddled with - just terrible. Start with an awkward scene jump as you turn to the second page that makes you think some pages are missing, to the bizarre introduction of the ice cream truck solely to establish that dogs like sweets, to the canine cleaning solution that makes no sense, to the man in the yellow hat claiming that he'd been looking for George when George had been in the house all day - arrgh! The clunky story flow lacks the clever rhythms of the originals and many of the finer newer tales, which are a joy to read for both adults and children. Three stars for the art, none for the writing.

This story follows the same story arch of all the others: Man with the yellow hat leaves George alone (will he never learn?), George inadvertently creates a disaster, and all works out in the end. My four year old loves Curious George and enjoyed a story with a birthday theme.

My daughter loves this story and she would like to have all of the George books. However, in this story I was a bit surprised when George invited a pack of dogs into the kitchen to lick it clean!
