Editorial Reviews

Review

George is happy to be outside—it is a clear windy day and his neighbor Bill is flying a kite. That looks like something that could really be fun. When Bill has to go because his mother is calling for his help, he turns the kite over to George. This particular kite is too big for George to manage and it takes off with him. Luckily for him, the man in the yellow hat arrives in his hang glider and rescues his pal. The closing pages provide instructions for building paper airplanes (not a kite) and instructions for flying a kite. Since kites are not hard to make, it seems a bit strange that instructions are not given for making one. A Level 1 book that contains simple sentences and concepts. (Children's Literature )

About the Author

The Reys were born in Hamburg, Germany. Hans Augusto Rey (1898-1977) met his wife-to-be, Margret (1906-1996), at a party in her father's home in Germany; when he first caught a glimpse of her, she was sliding down the banister. In their twenties and thirties they lived in Paris and in Rio de Janeiro, where Hans sold bathtubs in villages along the Amazon River. Eventually Cambridge, Massachusetts, became the Reys' home and community. Throughout their lives the Reys created many lively books together, including SPOTTY, PRETZEL, and lift-the-flap books such as HOW DO YOU GET THERE? The manuscript of the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and CURIOUS GEORGE was published in 1941. Their incorrigible little monkey has become an American icon, selling millions of books and capturing the hearts of readers everywhere. CURIOUS GEORGE has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian. Additional Curious George books followed, as well as such other favorites as CECILY G. AND THE NINE MONKEYS and FIND THE CONSTELLATIONS.

5.0 out of 5 stars My son actually prefers the new books to the old..., May 17, 2007

I grew up with Curious George & had all the books. My son now watches the "new" PBS cartoons & absolutely LOVES them (as do my husband & I). He likes the books too & these "Early Readers" are good for him, because they aren't long & he's even starting to recognize the words (I point to them as I read) also they follow the episodes that he knows from T.V. & he enjoys that. They aren't quite like the old ones I grew up on, but my 4 1/2 year old loves them & so do I. George is cuter than ever....and I am glad he's back for my son to enjoy!!!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars good for 3-4 year olds but not older, September 24, 2009

bought this book as a party favor for my son's Curious George party. Paired it with a kite and it was a big hit. It's a more simple book than others so recommend to younger pre-schoolers.
