About the Author

Philip Steele has a passion for writing about history. He is a well-known author of more than one hundred children's books, including Castles, Pirates, Knights, The Best Book of Mummies, The World of Pirates, and The World of Castles. He was a student of medieval French and German literature, and has visited castles in England, France, Germany, Spain, and Poland. He has travelled to the Valley of the Kings and other sites of Ancient Egypt, and has met mummies face to face in the Cairo Museum. Philip now lives near Beaumaris and the other great castles of North Wales.

My daughter really wanted to dive into the whole egyptian thing. After going to the library and borrowing not so kid friendly books this was refreshing. Easy to read and fun facts.

This book is written in a very informative manner. There is tons of information on each page both in the body of the text as well as on the side margins. The book's format is to ask questions and then answer them on the following page. Some of the illustrations are vivid and somewhat silly to appeal to younger readers. I enjoyed reading it to my young son because we were able to "discover" together. There were a lot of facts that I didn't know and this book helped make the information easier to understand. I would recommend this to a friend.

Your child plus Sculpee air-dry clay (and some paint) can make almost every craft in the book. Packed with information on Egypt, with photographs and short chunks of text, this book is a good resource for learning about Egypt.

The instructions for the crafts are teeny teeny teeny, but the instructions include many photos of the craft in progress, so that is good.

Short glossary, with words like alabaster, amulet, artifact, cataract, cubit, faience...

Good index.

We used more of the crafts in the book "Pyramids!" by Kaleidoscope Kids -- that book used a wider variety of materials. This book is great for crafts on a small budget -- $10 in materials and you can make everything.
