Curl Inside Herself by Niya Holland Lloyd is a poignant story of a woman and the effect her choices have made on her oldest daughter, Dara. Selena was a single mother raising Dara alone, after being deserted by Dara's father, when she met her future husband. Dara and her three sisters witness their mother endure what seems to be an endless nightmare of abuse and ridicule by the hands of their father and stepfather, Stephen.

As a young adult, Dara does what she has to do to help her mother with her younger sisters, even if it means putting her own life on hold. Watching her daughter, Selena can see her making some of the mistakes she made and tries to show her how worthy she is. Through this give and take, there is constant turmoil, resentment and stress in Selena and Dara's relationship.

This book reads as if I am reading about someone that I know, or could know - be it a next door neighbor or a co-worker that is frequently passed in the hallway. The author has an uncanny ability to make her characters seem very real, as if you're in the room with them. As a reader, I felt Dara's emotion as she wrestled with her decisions and with her mother as she watched her daughter grow up with the examples she gave her. I recommend this book to those that enjoy reading about the dynamics of mother/daughter relationships.

I read this book in a two days. I felt like I knew the characters and the details were so real, I could vividly envision each setting as though I was there. If you're looking for a book that will pull you in and hold you captive til the last word, this is the one!

This book made me feel like I was right in the middle of what was happening. Great read, very descriptive.
