5.0 out of 5 stars Great Curl Guide
This curly convert thought Ouidad's book was very informative. I have had frizzy wavy hair forever and got tired of having it straightened. Ouidad taught me a sensible system for bringing out and caring for my natural curl. My hair never looked better now that I have the tools to control it. Ouidad gets right to the point and covers all the basics, from washing to...

I've had to deal with my curls all my life, and I was hoping that this would help. It didn't. I later purchased Massey's book, Curly Girl, which has totally helped. As a professional model, the way my hair looks is an integral part of my career. I saw Ouidad on Glow (the TV show on the Style Network) and thought that although she merely COATED Linda Lopez's hair with product, maybe the book would have more to it. Not true. The book -as another reviewer said- was pure, shameless self promotion and did LITTLE to provide actual assistance in the matter of caring for you hair. On the other hand, Massey's book, Curly Girl, gave you TOOLS to care for you hair, and even developed a fool-proof system. What I liked most about MASSEY'S system is that she wrote about all types of curl textures, regardless of your ethnicity. Furthermore, I even visited Massey's salon in NYC, which is called Devachan, and I must admit that they actually walked the walk & talked the talk. The knowledge behind Curly Girl is apparent in the salon, & I only wish that *all* women had a salon like that near them! (I traveled from Michigan...I was in NYC for a fashion show.) Bottom line: If you want to be taught to buy products, get Ouidad's book. If you want to be taught about your hair, how to care for it, how to love it, and what works for it & get it to look good, buy Massey's. The choice is clear, Curlies!!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Very Ordinary, October 10, 2002

This review is from: Curl Talk: Everything You Need to Know to Love and Care for Your Curly, Kinky, Wavy, or Frizzy Hair (Paperback)
This book didn't tell me anything that I didn't already know about hair care just from owning curly hair and wearing it curly for the last 23 years. The directions for making the hairstyles were very difficult to follow - I saw a hairstyle in the book and tried to duplicate it, but the instructions Ouidad had given confused me and the style didn't turn out. It kind of bothered me that she gave instructions for straightening hair. I want to make my curls look better, not damage my precious hair with straightening treatments! Overall, I was bored and annoyed with this book. Curly Girl is a lot better.

2.0 out of 5 stars Some good curl advice but not a book to live by, August 28, 2004
This review is from: Curl Talk: Everything You Need to Know to Love and Care for Your Curly, Kinky, Wavy, or Frizzy Hair (Paperback)
This book does have some good advice for handling curl if you are absolutely clueless as to how to manage your mane. However, I did not find it to have as much complete iformation as the book, Curly Girl, which I highly recommend.

The good points about Curl Talk is she teaches the chronic "touchers" to leave their hair alone and emphasizes the importance of moisturizing and protecting your fragile locks. However, the information is at times incomplete, especially for beginners, and often not well written on points that are difficult to understand; leaving the reader not fully capable of following her instructions. The photographes are very poor and considering the poorly written instructions, the photographs are of importance for the reader to understand her directions, especially when trying to copy a specific hair style.

The book is a fair example of general information about curly hair, but does not go into enough detail nor is it written well enough to be the end-all instruction manual for curly hair.

Try Curly Girl by Lorraine Massey, it's a great book to release your inner Curly Diva.

This curly convert thought Ouidad's book was very informative. I have had frizzy wavy hair forever and got tired of having it straightened. Ouidad taught me a sensible system for bringing out and caring for my natural curl. My hair never looked better now that I have the tools to control it. Ouidad gets right to the point and covers all the basics, from washing to conditioning to styling. It is also a fun and easy read, with many anecdotes along the way.

I appreciate that Ouidad created her own products, as I don't have the time to search through the many products on the market. Her products are excellent, and the fact that I can purchase them from her streamlines the process.

Another great book is Curly Girl by Lorraine Massey. I find switching back and forth between the two books' techniques gives me many choices on how to make my hair look great every day.

1.0 out of 5 stars sorry Ouidad :(, March 11, 2004

I love Ouidad products, but I would not buy this book again. It really was just one big adertisement for Ouidad products.

Don't get me wrong, I love what Ouidad does for my hair. I always get tons of compliments when I use their Deep Treatment but as far as books go, get Curly Girl instead. Lorraine Massey is solely interested in promoting beautiful curly hair, not just her product line.

There's also a newer curly hair line called JessiCurl. It's my new favorite.

I say skip this book and invest in some product that will enhance your curls. I've tried Ouidad, Deva Curl and Jessicurl and they're all wonderful.

What a waste of time. If I wanted to buy overpriced products, I'd hit the mall. If I wanted to read some really silly testimonials, I'd buy a copy of The National Enquirer. Ouidad provided minimal information sandwiched between shameless self-promotion.

Curly Girl, by Lorraine Massey, is a better choice.

1.0 out of 5 stars Get CURLY GIRL book instead, December 4, 2005
This review is from: Curl Talk: Everything You Need to Know to Love and Care for Your Curly, Kinky, Wavy, or Frizzy Hair (Paperback)
Sorry but this book was like watching an informercial for Ouidad products. Don't waste your money on the book or the "miracle product." Buying a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner which contains the right proteins, emollients, humectants etc.and alcohol-free clear hair gel from your local discount store will do the trick. HINT: Look for products in the ethnic hair care section of your store, product with a big price tag that promises your hair a miracle!

boring basics...nothing new. if you don't know the basics-then this book will be of help. personally, I was a bit disappointed. I mean we are talking about a book written by Ouidad--she could have done MUCH better. okay I know its a conflict-of-interest to mention her own product line, and no one is expecting her to tout the competion but at the very least she could have said: for product information-write me at'address'. there is no contact address. like I said-could have been better.

I love Ouidad Deep Treatment as a deep conditioner and all of the other Ouidad products that I have tried; however, this book isn't all that helpful. For real help with curly hair, skip this book and spend your book money on Ouidad products. If you want a book about curly hair worth buying, buy Curly Girl by Massey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book to regain control of your hair!, September 24, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Curl Talk: Everything You Need to Know to Love and Care for Your Curly, Kinky, Wavy, or Frizzy Hair (Paperback)
I have wavy, frizzy, wild & crazy hair. No joke, my sunglasses get stuck in them. I have no time or patience (and 2 left hands), so my hair was always weighted down or left frizzy.

I first saw Ouidad on the E! Channel with Linda Lopez (J.Lo's sis) and thought, if only I lived in NY I would have a place to go. Then, weeks later, I saw her again on The Early Show, promoting her new book. Even though I am a born skeptic, I got the book (hey, I saw her on 2 national TV shows in a month, she must know what she is doing). I tried other books about hair care and curly hair, and they never help and I end up frustrated that I listened to the reviewer in the first place. But this book has really helped me. Reading about what ingredients to look for in hair products and which to avoid alone was worth it to me. It shows you how to care for your hair from washing and drying, styling and blowing straight, how to pick a stylist, and tells you the truth about the myths of curly hair.

I don't have skills concerning my hair, but I am getting the hang of it since reading CURL TALK. And if I can get soft, bouncy curls on my own, then so can everyone else!
