A wonderful introduction to the sport,
By 2nearsighted (Dublin, OH) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Curling for Dummies (For Dummies (Lifestyles Paperback)) (Paperback)
I'm one of the few people I know who has the entire "For Dummies" library, ranging from auto repair to gastro-intestinal surgery. CURLING FOR DUMMIES is a welcome addition to the set, especially since the popularity of the sport has skyrocketed in recent years due to winter olympic coverage. Whether you intend to start your own local curling team, or whether you're simply interested in following the Canadian league with satellite television or some kind of short wave radio--CURLING FOR DUMMIES will acquaint you with all of the rules and nuances of the games, from techniques and ice conditions, to a lucid explanation of what all that yelling is about and what that one person is doing with the broom. Thank you Bob Weeks, for opening the door to a beautiful ballet, crossed with a chess match, and taking place on ice, mostly with Canadians.

Nothing 'Dumb' about it!,

This review is from: Curling for Dummies (For Dummies (Lifestyles Paperback)) (Paperback)
The book is great as a stand alone, or as a backup for those of us who have embarked on our curling careers already, and need a little extra help remembering all the phrases, shots, rules, etc.
It also gives some background and history on alot of the aspects of curling, which help you better understand the sport as a whole. Anyone who thinks curling is easy needs to sit down and read the book and sign up for a class. There's nothing 'easy' or 'dumb' about it, but you will meet alot of very interesting people and gain a new respect for the people who have been doing this their entire lives.

A great book for beginners. Covers all the basics very well. Not only does it discuss how-to and strategy but also talks about watching games on TV and attending bonspiels. It is also a very smooth read.

The best (and really, for all intents and purposes the ONLY) guide to Curling for us non-Canadians....
I used it while taking a Curling class here locally....it was great fun, it had all the information I would ever need, and it helped me keep up with the lingo and rules without looking like a total homer....

A fun, easy to read book that covers the sport of curling from A to Z. No stone is left unturned (no pun intended!). From the history of the sport to it's debut in the Olympics, this book covers it all. Rules and strategy are covered, as well as customs and courtesies that are common among the sport. This book is an absolute must for all beginner curlers and anyone who wants to know more about the game without being overwhelmed.

A good follow up after you start curling,
By N. Trachta (Colorado Springs, CO United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Curling For Dummies (Paperback)
Back in February of 2010 my wife and I were watching curling in the Olympics and my wife, not familiar with the sport (I knew a little about it, enough to be dangerous), became fascinated. We went home from dinner and continued watching the games. While watching, I surfed around and learned that we had a local curling club and they did Learn to Curl's. We did that in March and have sense participated in a Beginner's League. Wanting to learn a little more, and not being afraid to admit I'm a dummy I picked up Curling for Dummies.
Curling for Dummies presents curling at the beginners level but seems to give much more (while I'm just getting started, I've seen a few things I know I should cover again after I have more experience). The book is divided into six sections that go from introducing the sport to the fundamentals to playing the game and getting better. Subjects are presented in a nice simple format with subsections covering details very nicely. Rating wise I'm calling this a 4 star book. I was generally impressed with its presentation of curling. There's good details to expand a beginners understanding but its no substitute for learning from a certified curling instructor (if you're interested in curling I highly recommend attending a Learn to Curl from a local curling club). I do believe this book is helpful to beginners and intermediates to understand more about curling so they can talk with the more experienced curls in their club and possibly improve their game.

From the perspective of the person who curled for several years 8 years ago and is now getting back into the sport by founding a new club, this is a great book with a look of good info for both new and old curlers alike.
With all the press curling has gotten recently, good luck finding a copy.

I picked up curling just after the 2006 Olympics. This book does a pretty good job covering all the aspects of curling, from scoring, sweeping, delivery, and more. This book won't replace a lesson from an experienced curler, but its certainly a good reference once you've gotten out on the ice. This book has the Triangle Curling Club Seal of Approval, if there is such a thing :)

I had no idea about the sport whatsoever but having read the book I feel like a professional (even though I have not tried playing it yet!). The book is well-organized, very informative and fun to read.
