Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

From 1984 to 1989 Povich hosted a syndicated television program, A Current Affair , under the aegis of Rupert Murdoch and the Fox network. With an assist from People magazine staff writer Gross, he here retraces the story of his life with a concentration on the show. Since Povich's top associates were Australians, trained in the tradition of "killer journalism," the account of their joint venture is wild and wooly. Much of the news the show covered was overdramatized with hype, yet Povich fails to discern the dross: the tale of surrogate mother Mary Beth Whitehead, for instance, is described as "like the Scopes trial and the Lindbergh kidnapping all rolled into one," and the bedroom escapades of film star Rob Lowe are presented as genuinely significant. Povich rarely rises above the pedestrian in this book, although that may be an advantage in videoland.

4.0 out of 5 stars Maury Povich is very smart and witty-he kept my attention., May 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Current Affairs - A Life On The Edge (Hardcover)
The book is an autobiography, however it was also a little-how to put it-true crime like, he being a news journalist, one might exspect that. The style of writing seems to be that of someone who is very good at speaking out loud. He also had this habit of jumping from subject to subject-which I very much enjoyed-he was quick-but thourough. Something that I always enjoyed about Maury Povich is his humour. Hes quite witty-and you call tell that in the book. All in all-I found it interesting-and it kept my attention-it was good. And remember-Maury Povich is a fox!

4.0 out of 5 stars Connie's one lucky lady, August 8, 2006
This review is from: Current Affairs (Paperback)
Let's face it, this guy is a humanitarian. I have been watching his television show for years and can't tell you how many times I have been brought to tears. He has helped so many unfortunate young ladies find the fathers of their babies. Just watch when they get so upset, he is there with a hug and tender words. Maury has also helped me come to terms with my prejudices with people with physical deformities. If I hadn't watched his show, I'm not sure I still wouldn't make comments when I saw someone different from me. It's good that I can watch his show so I don't stare at those people on the street. I guess I never thought they had feelings like me before.
This book mostly focuses on Maury's early career. I guess I didn't even know what news was until I started watching a "Current Affair." If you feel like you want more Maury when his show ends every day...GET THIS BOOK NOW! It will fill your need for a man that cares about US!
