Do Alcohol Advertisments Encourage Alcohol Abuse? How Should Alcoholism Be Treated? (20040901)

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Like other entries in the Current Controversies series, this one looks at several sides of an issue. A diverse, well-balanced selection of primary source materials by experts is used to debate such topics as the effectiveness of Alcoholics Anonymous and the alcohol industry's responsibility for its marketing program. An annotated table of contents and chapter prefaces provide background information for readers. Librarians, teachers, and students will find the book to be a solid, invaluable resource on its subject. A lengthy bibliography and a list of organizations to contact are appended. Mary Romano Marks

Review

"This anthology includes essays that initially appeared in periodicals, newspapers, books, government documents, and public and private organizational publications...A balanced presentation for highly controversial views, the selections differ in style and polish; some are carefully reasoned, and others are emotionally charged. Three major sections explore the dimensions of the problem, its causes, and possible remedies. Pulling no punches, this title covers its subjects well. Useful for research, for reports, and for debates."
-- School Library Journal (November 2001) (School Library Journal 20020501)

"I have almost every series Greenhaven Press has published and love them all..These titles will be a gret resource for current events, history, and speech classes and debate teams. Highly Recommended."
--Library Media Connection (August/September 2004) (Library Media Connection )

"This wide-ranging entry in the Current Controversies series gives readers information for reports as well as for making personal choices. The writing is more intellectual than impassioned, and supporting evidence usually comes from respected sources that young readers will likely recognize and trust. Rich materials for many curricular disciplines."

4.0 out of 5 stars It helped a lot!!, October 18, 2000

This review is from: Current Controversies - Alcoholism (hardcover edition) (Hardcover)
This book helped me to understand my situation better. I had been assigned to write about Alcoholism and it's effects on families in my English Comp. I class. As a coincidence, my uncle is an alcoholic. I got this book and not only did it help me with my paper but it made me understand that my uncle can't help what has happened to him. He is chemically dependant on it. He had become dependant on the alcohol to deal with everyday situations and interactions. I would recomend this book to anybody who knows or once knew an alcoholic. It will make you want to go and give them a hug, and reassure them.
