Collection of Articles on Economic Policies,
By J.L. Populist (WI,USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Current Economic Issues: Progressive Perspectives from Dollars & Sense, 11th ed. (Perfect Paperback)
This book is a compilation of articles written about economic issues that were current in 2007.
Dollars and Sense published this book as part of a series. In addition they have their own website. Among the numerous issues that are addressed are labor woes and how outsourcing of jobs has effected sectors of American labor. Another issue is the compensation for CEOs and the Bush tax cuts. On page 80 there is a quote on those tax cuts- "Bush gave away revenues meant to provide for worker's retirement as tax cuts for the wealthiest 10% of the population." On social programs there is interesting information on Medicare Part D. A related subject is pensions: defined-benefit pensions vs. defined-contribution plans and the effects on retirement income. On the chapter written about Wal Mart there are some insightful facts about Wal Mart and employee benefits. The percentage that their employees pay in premiums and the amount of workers that don't have coverage when compared with employees of Costco is very interesting. An issue that I hadn't considered is the environmental conditions and pollution in New Orleans and some other parts of Louisiana prior to Katrina. This is a good source for a Progressive political viewpoint on economics. The articles are written well and not overly dry. |
