Can I give it 10 stars?,
By
This review is from: Current Medical Diagnosis & Treatment, 2006 (Current Medical Diagnosis and Treatment) (Paperback)
CMDT is "The Book" for medical doctors, including residents. It is a perfect combination of practical information and theorethical details. It contains "exactly" what you need to know. Unlike big textbooks, it doesn't have all the mumbo jumbo that you will not need for patient care. It is full of practical information about patient management, including medications. their side effects and their prices. It gets updated every year with latest evidence based data and you can be sure that you are practicing based on the latest advances in medicine. For me as a resident, this is the main source. I barely have time to read Harrison's, and even if I do, at the end I will be left with lots of unsolved practical problems. This book is excellent in every aspect. If you read it once, you can rest assure that you know what you are doing. The sections related to other specialities are also perfect for a primary care doctor. I am pretty sure that I will be reading this book for years to come. If I could, I would give 10 stars!

It's always helpful to have a book on hand, with valued scientific information and up to date. For the ones who doesn't know the Current Medical Diagnosis and Treatment, it's important to have in mind that it is not only a good reference, but also an excelent book for the occasions you're in a hurry and don't have time to check an issue in a large text book. Sometimes I have to check a prescription or some specific symptom in a pacient and this book is always a good choice. Moreover, the price is quite good right now, comparing to other books. Remember you'll use this book a lot, it's really useful.

The Standard by Which Others are Compared,
By
This review is from: Current Medical Diagnosis & Treatment, 2006 (Current Medical Diagnosis and Treatment) (Paperback)
The Bible of the subject. Each edition gets better, in the last few years of course the big changes have been in HIV/AIDS and in the improved treatment of various cancers. Other than that there are a thousand or more changes, updates and additions on virtually all types of diagnosis and treatments.
This is a general book, it crosses all specialties. It is primarily intended for the primary care physician, but would also be of great value in some nursing environments, in remote clinics where a physician might not be available and for specialists in one field who may need information on other areas. I imagine that most people thinking of getting this book are at least familiar with it. All I can really say is that this is the latest edition, it's updated with the latest information, it's the standard by which others are compared.

I am currently a second year PA student. This has been an amazing help on my rotations, all of them. I recommended it several of my classmates; they also love it. We have a test at the end of each rotation, and this is a perfect way to review. Just the facts without much fluff. It is also a handy reference in the clinic.

Feel Updated and Great,
By Prof. KNV. (Pondicherry, INDIA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Current Medical Diagnosis & Treatment, 2006 (Current Medical Diagnosis and Treatment) (Paperback)
Reading this book makes one feel "updated and great". It stands out prominently amongst the other standard voluminous texts in Medicine and a notable feature is that it is brought out every year. A student of Medicine and a Physician ought to have this manual in their desks for day to day reference. This book also helps immensely in the last minute revision prior to examinations.Evidence based medicine, Updates and Clinical trials are part and parcel of this friendly manual. As a Professor of Medicine , I feel that topics not essential to Internal Medicine may be left out in the subsequent editions to make the book lighter.I recommend this text for all postgraduates in Internal Medicine and students wishing to undertake MD , MRCP or AB course in Internal Medicine.

Poor man's UpToDate,
By
This review is from: Current Medical Diagnosis & Treatment, 2006 (Current Medical Diagnosis and Treatment) (Paperback)
I used UpToDate before I bought this book. UpToDate costs $195 per year if you are a student. This book costs under $60. If you don't need a large amount of detail, you can get away with using this book instead of UpToDate. You will save money (especially if you are a poor student) without sacrificing much quality. Buy the book new so you can get the online access. I bought the book and went straight to the online access and gave the book to one of my friends. It's definitely worth it since you don't want to lug around a book this big. The book has excellent content and has good internal med coverage. Some of the specialties are a little weak (UpToDate has the same problem), but this book was meant for the generalist. The images in the online version are very informative.

Brief and objective way to keep updated in general clinics. It is probably one of the best ways to keep updated, when working specificaly in a defined field. As an otolaryngologist, it is always a good source of information in other fields. The chapter of AIDS and HIV, gets longer every year. The first time I read it, it was in 1983 with few pages related to it, and now the chapter has pages and pages, enough for a non AIDS/HIV specialist (I hope!).
