Book Description

This timely volume provides a complete guide to designing and implementing personalized curricula for K-12 students with moderate and severe disabilities. The author delineates a comprehensive assessment model that provides a framework for pinpointing educational priorities, planning instruction in specific areas, and evaluating student progress. Emphasizing the values of self-determination, family-centered planning, multicultural awareness, and educational accountability, the strategies presented are teacher-friendly and data-based. Case studies in every chapter illustrate the educational needs and accomplishments of students with a variety of disabilities, including autism, mental retardation, severe behavior disorders, and multiple disabilities. Further enhancing the practical utility of the volume are sample assessment notes, reports, and instruction plans; inventories of key skills in different domains; and descriptions of commercially available instructional resources. Included are more than 15 reproducible forms. An ideal undergraduate or graduate-level text, this is also an invaluable resource for teachers, school psychologists, and other special education professionals.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"I have taught Assessment and Curriculum Development for Students with Intensive Special Needs for the past 5 years. As both a teacher educator and a practitioner, I have always been frustrated at the lack of support and guidance available for teachers in the development of curriculum. I have searched high and low for a text that adequately represents the decisions that teachers, therapists, and adult service workers have to make. Finally, Dr. Browder has provided that book! This is the first text I've ever used that almost makes me feel the author is teaching the class with me. I am thrilled it was published in time for use this semester." --Susan Ainsleigh, MS Ed., Instructor, Graduate Program in Special Education, Simmons College, Boston, MA

"This book is a valuable tool to prepare teachers to work with students with significant disabilities in the classrooms of the 21st century. The strength of the text is its breadth and functionality: It covers an unusually wide array of topics while maintaining a user-friendly and applied focus. The emphasis throughout on self-determination and student involvement ensures that educators will be prepared to provide services and supports that are student based. The 1997 amendments to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act emphasized that all students must have access to a challenging curriculum. This text will enable teachers working with students with moderate and severe disabilities to meet that important objective." --Michael L.Wehmeyer, PhD, Beach Center on Families and Disability, University of Kansas

"Diane Browder's latest book comes at an opportune time. The text is comprehensive and fills an important gap in the professional literature. Browder does an outstanding job of linking assessment and curriculum in ways that reflect exemplary practices. The numerous examples, charts, and forms are extremely helpful in translating the theory and research into practice. I recommend this book to professors teaching courses in the area of severe disabilities and to anyone in the field interested in assessment and curriculum." --Michael F. Giangreco, PhD, Research Associate Professor, Center on Disability and Community Inclusion, University of Vermont, Burlington, Vermont

"This book successfully unites a variety of current best practices, based on both research and theory, in a way that is readily transferrable to the real world. Drawing on her own experiences with students with disabilities, Browder has peppered the book with examples and case studies that accurately illustrate the practices she advocates. Researchers will appreciate the details of the reviewed studies, while practitioners will find this book of value in transferring research to practice. This is an up-to-date and reader-friendly text for anyone preparing personnel to work with persons with severe disabilities, or anyone practicing in the field. I am looking forward to using it in both undergraduate and graduate courses." --Belva C. Collins, EdD, Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling, University of Kentucky

3.0 out of 5 stars A fine textbook..if you can understand clinical case studies, January 26, 2004

I found this book to be of value. As a special education major with an emphasis on children with severe disabiities I found there was a lot of information in this book.
But due to the style of writing contained here, it is more of a reference book than something a student can use to gain quick knowedge of their field.

Personally I am unsure why we had to buy this required text in the first place. Our instructor said that the information in it was outdated, so she used her own information in lecture instead. I would not recommend purchasing this book-if it's outdated, why buy it?

The textbook arrived very quickly. The condition of thsi product was marked in good to like new. After one night of using this book the binding came apart. It looks trashy carrying around book in two pieces. I would have rather spent the money at the bookstore on a book that would have lasted through the school sememster and had a better resale value.
