Book Description

9 and up4 and upCynthia's Attic
Colorful pirates, SuRana-- a shape-shifting puma, and an old Cajun guide named Mud Bug join Cynthia and Gus as they explore the Curse of the Bayou. The latest quest for the adventurous, twelve-year-old best friends finds them in a Louisiana bayou. There, they search for answers in the disappearance of Cynthia's great-grandfather, Beau Connor, who was on his way down the Mississippi River to sell a flatboat full of produce. With the help of a magic trunk in Cynthia's attic, this time-traveling duo venture back to 1914 New Orleans. The warm welcome and advice from old friend, Gabriella, is small comfort when Mud Bug warns them to stay away from Buzzard Jack LaBuse, the meanest, orneriest pirate this side of the Mississippi, his gang of misfits, Snags, Darby, and Salty Sam, their thieving parrot mascot. A trip to the Connor's Southern Indiana farm reveals a strange connection between Beau and Buzzard Jack, and a family curse that might be responsible for Cynthia's great-grandfather's disappearance. Returning to New Orleans, a harrowing ride on a roller coaster sends them farther back in time to 1844, straight into the clutches of the evil pirate, fighting for their lives. A mysterious treasure and heart-stopping adventure lead to a final confrontation in the girls' mission to save Great Granddaddy Beau.

From the Author

My series, Cynthia's Attic, is inspired by a 20-year recurring dream about a mysterious attic. When I realized that the dream took place in the home of my childhood best friend, Cynthia, I wrote a short memoir about our friendship and the "early days." That memoir  turned into a 4-book (soon to be 5) 'Tween fantasy/mysteries.

Cynthia and I lost touch for years, but shortly after the first two books were published, my husband and I moved to West Georgia within 40 miles of Cynthia's home! Our first meeting, after almost 20 years, was spent talking and laughing as if we were still sitting in her attic searching through boxes and trunks of memories. She loves the books and our friendship remains strong and true.

More About the Author

"I live in my own little world, but it's okay, they know me here."

Author, Mary Cunningham grew up in the sleepy little town of Corydon, Indiana. And she really means, "in the town!" Her house was just beyond the main intersection that took Southern Indiana cars and trucks from north to west. That was well before I-64 zoomed traffic just north of town, so imagine the teeth-grinding sound an 18-wheeler made wheeling around the tight corner, then downshifting as they passed her house. Winter? Not so bad. Summer with the windows open? Countless sleepless nights sitting on the porch with her dad telling stories and learning about the constellations.

After 10 years as a bank teller, followed by a horrifying stint as a travel agent and more rewarding experience teaching travel and tourism and the airline computer reservation system, she finally realized that her heart belonged to writing.

Her childhood experiences, and a recurring dream about a mysterious attic, inspired her to create characters, Cynthia and Augusta Lee, for her award-winning 'Tween series, "Cynthia's Attic." Like Cynthia and Gus, her childhood best friend, Cynthia and she grew up in a small, Southern Indiana town...the setting for the series. Cunningham and her friends spent much of the summer playing softball, hide and seek, badminton, and croquet in a vacant lot on her block. Years later, those joyful summers would be recalled in the four-book series, "Cynthia's Attic."

She is also co-author of the humor-filled lifestyle book, (WOOF) Women Only Over Fifty, along with a published short stories, Ghost Light, and "Cynthia's Attic" short story, Christmas With Daisy.

At present, she is awaiting the release of Cynthia's Attic: Five (June 15, 2012) in between writing 2 adult mysteries.

Cunningham is a member of The Georgia Reading Association, and the Carrollton Creative Writers Club.

When she gives her fingers a day away from the keyboard, she enjoys golf, swimming and exploring the mountains of West Georgia where she makes her home with her husband. Together they've raised three creative children, have 2 granddaughters and an adopted, four-legged, furry daughter, Lucy.

At last count, she's moved 9 times into six different states (all after the age of 36), and aside from the packing and unpacking, she believes it's been a great experience, having made some very dear and lasting friendships.

Mary Cunningham spends non-writing time showing power point presentations on gathering ideas and the writing process to schools and libraries.

She may be reached through her publisher, Quake/Echelon Press, or through her website: Marycunninghambooks.com.

5.0 out of 5 stars fabulous young adult time travel mystery, March 19, 2008
This review is from: Curse of the Bayou: Cynthia's Attic (Paperback)
In Indiana in 1964 best friends Cynthia and Gus decide to learn what happened to the former's great-grandfather Beau who vanished in 1915 while on a business trip. The two best friends enter the attic of Cynthia's home and the trunk sends them through time where they avoid being alligator bait thanks to some bologna Gus had. The quickly learn it is 1914 when they meet octogenarian Mouton" Mud Bug" Boudreau who warns the two young girls to avoid pirates like Buzzard Jack LaBuse. He begins taking them by canoe to New Orleans when he and his boat vanish.

The two buddies find themselves in 1844 where Jasmine is quite nice to them and so is her ten years old son Mooty called Mud Bug by everyone. From there the clues take them to 1915 and the farm of Samantha Connor whose spouse Beau vanished last year on a business trip in New Orleans. The girls know they are getting closer to finding Beau but wonder where they will go next in time.

The third Cynthia's Attic young adult time travel mysteries (see Magic Medallion and MISSING LOCKET) is a fabulous tale as the two intrepid best friends journey back and forth through time. The preadolescent pair remains consistent even with Gus having some non hunger moments while the support cast especially Mud Bug as an elderly person and a child make for a fun Bayou adventure with a fantastic final twist setting up the next entry.

This review is from: Curse of the Bayou: Cynthia's Attic (Paperback)
Mary Cunningham's Curse of the Bayou is full of tail spinning adventure. From the swamps of the Louisianna Bayou to a Southern Indiana farm - our dynamic duo of Cynthia and Gus are never far from the dangerous hook of the evil pirate, Jack LaBuse.

Each action packed chapter is crafted with colorful characters and suspenseful cliffhangers. Pages turn quickly as we must find out the secret of the disappearance of Cynthia's great grandfather, Beau Conner!

A very satisfying ending with a surprising revelation has us all wanting to see what Mary comes up with for her next book in this series!

WARNING - Do not read this book if you are hungry! Mary's vivid descriptions of the delectible dishes of Louisiana will make your tummy rumble even more!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and Funny!, March 20, 2008
This review is from: Curse of the Bayou: Cynthia's Attic (Paperback)
Curse of the Bayou is the third book in the charming Cynthia's Attic series. Gus and Cynthia are off on another crazy-cool adventure that takes them from alligator-infested swamps to pirate ships! The girls sparring friendship is fun and believable. Oh-so-perfect Cynthia with her wrinkle-free clothes and perfect nails vs. Oh-whatever Gus with baloney stuffed in her pockets. I loved the character of Mud Bug who goes from an 80-year-old cackler to a 10-year-old Cajun kid in just a few chapters! Add an accused witch, a scraggily parrot, a shape-shifting Puma, and a villanous pirate and this book has more twists than the Bayou itself. I recommend this book to girls who enjoy adventure stories and good friendships.
