CREEPY TALES,
By
This review is from: The Curse of the Campfire Weenies: And Other Warped and Creepy Tales (Hardcover)
This is a great collection of quality stories just as you would expect from David Lubar. Each one is short but well written and has a delicious creepy twist in the tail.

Inappropriate Age Level,

I think the age level for this book should be much higher. It totally freaked out my 9 year old. In fact, I found it uncomfortably creepy and I'm an adult. Stories about children choking on hot dogs and not getting out of "heaven" unless they hit a homerun in an otherwise endless baseball game, predators on the internet luring children to sneak out of their homes at night to meet them, children "mind-melded" into eating live bugs in order to have friends, ...
My child brought this book home from the school library. I strongly suggest parents think twice before allowing their child to read this.

This series was recommended to me by another Twilight Zone fan. At first, I was reluctant to buy these children books. But Lubar is a great short story teller who has the ability to appeal to young and old alike-what a talent. He builds upon childhood fears that never really seem to go away even though the older we get the more buried they become. The sense of humor will also appeal to adult readers. I'm going to start reading these to my kids but first I want to read all of them myself (very selfish) and then I will share. There are some clasic tales here like the creepy "Murgopana", and "Inquire Within". "The Soda Fountain" is a haunting story that stayed with me for days. "Fat Face" reminds of the days when I found it difficult to keep my hands out of Dorito bags and Twinkies were my best friend comforting me like pillows. I was a "Fat Face" growing up and this story reminds me of my trials. Lubar is a great writer! I can't wait to read these again when I read them out loud to my kids.

I use these stories as class starters in my 7th grade English class. The kids can't get enough of them. They are great.

Twilight Zone crosses Stephen King for kids,

This whole series is amazing. As mentioned in my title, it is a cross between Twilight Zone and Stephen King for kids. Definitely read it before letting your kids read it so you can decide if it will keep your kids up at night. They're great short stories for adults.

My boys 8 and 10y/o LOVE these stories. They go along innocently enough until you reach a mind boggling twist at the end. I have even caught my normally 'I don't want to sit still long enough to read' 10y/o snuggled in his bed in the middle of the day reading these stories. As the title states, these are 'warped and creepy tales' and SO fun to read!

Excellent young adult collection,
This review is from: The Curse of the Campfire Weenies: And Other Warped and Creepy Tales (Hardcover)
As with the two previous "Weenie ..." Tales (see LAND OF THE LAWN WEENIES and INVASION OF THE ROAD WEENIES), this collection consists of thirty-five extremely short stories (average size is approximately five pages) that target children as the prime audience. The tales are fun to read and usually contain a subtle morality message or a question to ponder that is interwoven into the story. For instance in "Mr. HooHaa", Mr. Lubar asks a key metaphysical question of are clowns more frightening without the make-up or a profound look into the universally accepted tenet that "You Are What You Eat". In "The Tunnel of Terror", Rachel learns the hard way that avoidance or even closing your eyes does not make the issue vanish (sounds like Rachel will grow up to be a politician). So like Ben get yourself a drink at "The Soda Fountain" and enjoy reading the warped and creepy tales of an expert as Mr. Lubar's latest shows how the grass is not necessarily greener when you escape from "The Curse of the Campfire Weenies" to end up with the Girl Scouts singing campfire weenies.

Questionable,

This review is from: The Curse of the Campfire Weenies: And Other Warped and Creepy Tales (Mass Market Paperback)
I just read a few stories in this book with my 9 year old. The one was fine. The other was about Predators and made it sound like it was okay to sneak out of your house at night to meet an on-line friend. I do not mind creative and off the wall topics but why downplay On-line Predators in a children's book?! The on-line friend asks the boy to sneak out at night to meet him at a quarry. The story was weird and I was waiting for the end to have some normal moral but it made it sound ok....its irresponsible (not warped, not creepy) This story should be a creepy one but it made creepy sound normal and ok.
How many children will read this book with an adult to actually use it as a teachable story for good? I am guessing not many. David Lubar what are you thinking? For that I give it a 1. Shame on you.

This review is from: The Curse of the Campfire Weenies: And Other Warped and Creepy Tales (Hardcover)
what a way to make your little one stretch their imaginations. I could just see the wheels turning unti it clicked in my kiddo. Short stories that left them thinking themselves to sleep although the stories were great also to quickly read when my son needed a break from homework. Loved all the wenie books.
