An Amazing and Unusual Story!,
By Kimfurd "Kimfurd" (Alabama) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cursebreaker (Order of the Scrolls) (Paperback)
Demon possession is a topic that appears once in a while in fiction. It is a topic that many find uncomfortable and unbelievable. Nancy Wentz has written a story that makes this topic very believable, but still quite uncomfortable! Cursebreaker tells the story of the Fratellia family and the generations - the centuries - of demon possession that has cursed their bloodline. God has sent a prophet to break that curse, and the battle that ensues is nothing short of horrific.
Cursebreaker is a story that requires some degree of suspended disbelief. Although spiritual warfare is not fictional, the concept provides a great launching pad of ideas from which unsettling fictional stories begin. Nancy's story is set in the 1930's where prohibition, g-men and mafia wars were realistic forces in society. She layers this reality with a supernatural curse, and in so doing creates a suspenseful, nerve-wracking story that the reader cannot put down! The mafia wars and intricate inner workings of the mafia family are portrayed in all of their violent, gory details. The Fratellia family represents the ultimate depravity on every level of human existence. The only viable spiritual force that stands against their demonic power is a young man ripped from the grip of a poverty-stricken, abusive father and given the supernatural gift of prophecy. This young man suffers unbelievable physical challenges throughout the course of the story, and often times your heart just aches with a desire to comfort and protect the child. I'd like to tell you that the ending of this story wraps things up for both the child in the story and the reader's emotions, but it just isn't possible. Your heart and mind are left raw - knowing that the battle still rages. And even though you know that God has already won the war, the battles that must be fought along the way will not be pretty. I'm a huge fan of suspense fiction. I've read some really good stories that deal with spiritual warfare. Cursebreaker is really good. It was like a very high-powered, action-packed movie playing out in your mind. It left me unsettled. I was reminded that as Christians, the warfare is real and we need to keep our focus on Christ and Christ alone. Without Him, we are utterly lost. This is strong reading folks! It stays with you. I look forward to the next book. No doubt Nancy Wentz has more to say about this cast of characters!

I actually got this book from the sister of the author, who is one of my teachers in school. I read the first few pages, thinking it wouldn't interest me, but i couldn't put it down! This is a great story and I can't wait for the next one!

This book will definitely keep you wanting more. I read it in 2 days! I am really excited to see what the next book holds. The book is written so well that I felt like I was right there with the characters in the book. There is not many authors that have that ability to bring the reader in like that. Nancy is extremely gifted from God and He is using her in a mighty way.

This is Nancy Wentz's first novel and it is an excellent read, but not a light hearted story. I was quite intrigued with the back cover telling of the story and the picture on the cover is great. I usually don't read books about demon possession unless it has the good winning the battle in the end, as it really does. Cursebreaker does that but has quite a twist in the Epilogue that I wasn't ready for.
Demon possession is a topic that many find difficult and unreal. In Nancy Wentz,s story she makes this matter very believable. Cursebreaker is about the Fratellia family and all of the past generations of hundreds of years of demon possession that has cursed their families. God sent a prophet {a young boy) to break the curse, and the fight that proceeds is horrendous. The ten-year-old boy, Luke is quite sweet and likeable. He has had a really hard start in life and wants to find Jesus and follow him. Cursebreaker is full of graphic and violent scenes, it is best not to read this book alone or right before bed. This book shows both the physical and spiritual dominions, with very graphic descriptions. If you keep reading you will also find hope, salvation and light that comes from Jesus Christ to the most despicable people and situations. During the book I kept hoping different people would become Christians. It was wonderful when some did. I was really glad to hear that there are two more books in this series. I want to make sure to read them and any other books Nancy Wentz writes. She has a wonderful gift and uses it very well. I recommend this book to you if you like books in the 1930's setting, mafia families, demon possession, spiritual warfare. A very interesting story that you won't want to put down. Thank you to Whitaker House for providing this book for review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. Awesome book, but beware, it's graphic.,

I probably don't have much more to say than the other reviewers, but I had to comment on this great read.
I love historical fiction and I feel as though this book was written for me. It is wonderful, start to finish. It has loads of suspense and action, great characters, and even court room drama. It's not too complicated. (I'm reading a book right now where in the first 20 or 25 pages the author is introducing too many characters at once and it's hard to keep up with.) I would warn readers though, that this book gets graphic and violent. Just wanted to throw that in there for parents of children under 18. This book is definitely for mature readers. Even though this is a book from a Christian author, this is really a story about a Mafia family and, for the most part, Nancy Wentz doesn't tone down the character and actions of the people in this story. It is however free of profane language. She uses, key, but subtle phrases in place of the actual "choice" words that would be used. (and she did this very well.) Great job Nancy. I highly recommend this book. Looking forward to the next!

This was a fun enjoyable book full of lots of plot twists. I liked how the author made her Christian beliefs clear without coming across as too preachy. The curse of the demon gave the story a creepy intense feel. The suspense kept me reading. There were just a couple things which bothered me. First, there were times when the main protagonist, Luke, came across as a little too innocent, though he did grow throughout the course of the book. Also, I didn't really like the epilogue. It seemed like it was tacked on after everything was already resolved for the sole purpose of setting the book up for a sequel. Aside from those things I found it a very exciting enjoyable read. Also, the copy I have is one nice paperback! I like the way it feels when I hold it. Kudos to the designer!

Great book!,

"Cursebreaker grabs the reader from the start and does not relent until the final page. The plot carries the action seamlessly. The characters spring to life in dynamic detail, and the imagery forges vivid pictures. All these parts blend together to create a fantastic thriller. I thoroughly enjoyed Cursebreaker from start to finish. The significance of the spiritual battle that surrounds us daily impressed me. I found I could relate to the fears and struggles of the characters. The action moves on at a quick pace and little space is wasted. I hope this entertaining book will have the opportunity to challenge many people's view of life."

Cursebreaker is at once devastatingly heart wrenching and spiritually uplifting. The author's ability to swing our emotions like a pendulum is captivating, and her storytelling is very precise. Her talent in creating a story that you truly feel, not just read, is astounding, betraying the fact this is her first novel. Ms. Wentz is a gifted writer with some of the best timing and descriptive ability I have encountered. As a fan of both Stephen King and Terry Blackstock, she plays very well to both sides. I look forward to her future efforts.

A Boy Prophet,
By
This review is from: Cursebreaker (Order of the Scrolls) (Paperback)
Nancy Wendt is a strong writer, weaving many threads together in a story with mystery, passion and intrigue in Depression-era Denver. Wendt's dramatic mystery unfolds in both the physical and spiritual realms, with a boy who is the front and center character with a powerful prophetic anointing.
There's lots of blood and violence, and the boy prophet is often the victim. An organized crime family with a generational curse dating back to the 16th century is responsible for much of the violence and death,

Not For the Fainthearted,

This review is from: Cursebreaker (Order of the Scrolls) (Paperback)
Cursebreaker is one of those books you don't want to read by yourself on a dark stormy night. It is full of mystery and suspense, some violence necessary to the story, and glimpses into the usually unseen spiritual dimension. Set in depression era Colorado, Cursebreaker graphically illustrates the very real war between good and evil. The primary characters include a young boy running from an abusive father, members of a Mafia family and their cohorts, a lawyer who is trying to prosecute one of the Mafia clan, and a young woman. As the plot progresses, each character becomes more deeply affected by the centuries old curse of the Fratelli family.
At first glance, Cursebreaker seems to be a dark and violence filled book but if the reader persists, he will find the hope, redemption and light that Christ brings to the most vile circumstances. Not for the fainthearted, but for those who are not afraid of the dark, Cursebreaker is a must read! |
