Format: Paperback
It's great to find a young girl as the swashbuckling heroine of a fine graphic novel, so that's a wonderful place to start from right there.

Added to that is the fact that the story really does have a great deal of swash and buckle. The Cursed Pirate Girl starts out as a sort of whimsical and deluded character, but then takes charge of her own adventure as she sets out on the Omerta Seas to find her lost father. With good companions and worthy foes she reasons and fights her way through a number of well-thought out adventures.

I think the real question is where you come out on the artwork. The illustrations are exaggerated and fantastical, with outrageous amounts of detail and incidental matter. Think of political cartoons from the late 1800's or the kinds of illustrations you see in old copies of "Punch" and the like. Caricature, lots of bits of dialogue slipped in around the edges, lots of detail and business. If you like that, you'll love this. If you find that style too busy or unattractive, then this book will be heavy going. I fall somewhere in the middle and appreciate what the artist was doing, and so that and the engaging story were enough for me.

For what it's worth, the description above on this Amazon page mentions a new epilogue created just for this collection. That's fine, but the neatest thing is that at the end of the book there are way more than a dozen versions of pirate girl drawn in almost every style imaginable. For me that was worth the cost of the book because each drawing was a fascinating expression of just how differently many distinct artists can represent a single character. Totally cool.

Please note that I received a free electronic copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a frank review.

I LOVE this book, mostly for the art. The story progresses in a rather nonsensical fairy-tale way, sort of like a Terry Gilliam movie. The art is simply magnificent, filled with fantastical details and decorative flourishes.

A stunning work of imagination and hand-crafted beauty. Get it, read it, spend happy hours finding the hidden treasures in the stunningly intricate artwork. If you missed out on reading the original single issues(as I did), this is a very happy find!
