My top issue with this story is the author's choice in perspective. Please, please don't write in first person if you're incapable of constructing sentences that don't start with either "I" or "my." Here's a little sample...please judge for yourself.
"I ran as fast as I could, which apparently was pretty fast. I saw the ocean through the trees and ran down to the beach. I looked both ways to ensure no one saw me carrying a dead girl out into the open waters. I felt the cold ocean water hit me like a refreshing wave. The cold didn't hurt like it should have. I swam out into the chuck holding her hand. I swam as hard as I could until I reached a good distance from the beach. I was amazed at how quickly I could swim. I let all of my breath out and grabbed the dead girl's hand. I sank like a stone down into the cool ocean water."
See what I mean? Nine of the ten sentences in this paragraph start with "I." This happens so frequently throughout the novel it made my eyes physically ache. This paragraph also gives a perfect example of the author's narrative abilities. "I felt the cold ocean water hit me like a refreshing wave." Really? The ocean hit you...like a wave. Mmmm-kay.
Cursed wasn't what I had expected or hoped for (thanks to the high reviews that led me astray). I get that the author wants the reader to fully grasp the level of suffering Aimee has gone through, but it felt that every other detail in the novel was completely overlooked because of it.Read more ›
Aimee's family has been struck by tragedy. Her mother died unexpectedly eight months ago. Since then Aimee has becomea shell of the person that she used to be. Her wardrobe consists of blacks and greys. Her best friend is a fellow nerd named Blake and she feels like she's living in her vibrant twin sister Alyce's shadow.
In an attempt to try and rejoin the real world Aimee makes a decision that will change her life. She attends a party at her sister's insistance. One horrible decision caused by an embarassing moment leads to events that change the direction of Aimee's life forver.
This book was amazing. I normaly write longer reviews, but there is so much that I do not want to give away. I insist that you read this series!
The main character I liked, she started from her grieving to slowly returning to life though it seemed to be to late for her. Her romances were interesting the reader can't help but pick sides of who your favorite is she should love. She gradually becomes a different person after her transformation and I must confess I admired this side much better her confidence showed more compared to when first meeting her in the beginning.
The male leads were so lovable in that they each had a quality about them that makes the reader fall for them. On the one hand you have a popular sweet open love and the other a mysterious damaged love. Very hard to choose which but was great non the less getting to know their personalities and their interactions with the main female lead.
The supporting characters were ugh frustrating! I found myself seriously disliking some of them and wanting to smack them for being so cruel. Some were more likable, not having nearly as much talk time but when they did it was supportive as a friend should be.
The 'steam' was good, m'kay. but there was too much steam with too many people. It was distasteful to me by the end.
The main plot starts off great. One thing that started to bother me first was how the main character was told time and time again how she wasn't as pretty as her sister, but cleans up nice. She is a twin by the way who cannot seem to cope with the loss of her mom. That is after make up and dresses are added and people take notice. Like the main, I thought i was a slap int he face. At least Shane mentions he likes her without all of that. Nerds are just to plain. While I get this, it was stated so many times...so not too too bad but tiring.
She was like her mom one minute then totally like her dad. This could have been good, but it was more confusing the way it was presented. Obvious right? she is their kid...BUT she started to turn out more like her fickle sister than herself. I was disappointment with her and her changes and how she handles them. While I get it was inexperience, it was not believable to me.I'm sorry, just wasn't.
I cried. The wind an her mom was great. Then I was sad it turned out to be something else. Giselle and Jamie parts were so moving I cried more. There is real power in these parts of the book. This is where Tara shines.
Blake, not best friend quality. Did such a major turn, I started to hate him.Read more ›
