harmless fun,

This review is from: Curses! Why Cleveland Sports Fans Deserve to Be Miserable: A Lifetime of Tough Breaks, Bad Luck, Goofs, Gaffes, and Blunders (Paperback)
this has some great anecdotal stories for those of us who grew up with the misery that accompanies being a cleveland sports fan but, by no means, is it good literature. it's entertaining, if not somewhat confounding because of the memories that it dredges up, if you want some light bathroom reading.

Just What We Needed!,
This review is from: Curses! Why Cleveland Sports Fans Deserve to Be Miserable: A Lifetime of Tough Breaks, Bad Luck, Goofs, Gaffes, and Blunders (Paperback)
I don't believe in curses but something has been going on in Cleveland sports for most of my life and it hasn't been good. Finally someone has put the crazy, absurd and disappointing down on paper and I think it's great. I was too young to remember Herb Score and my family talks about Rocky Colavito like he was a saint. I remember I cried as a little kid when Brian Sipe's pass ended up as "Red Right 88". But there's other neat stuff in this book that's funny and not so well known that helps us Cleveland sports fans deal with our plight. Curses! is a fun and easy book that's a must for every Clevelander, sports fan or not.

Like the other reviewer said, this is good for light bathroom reading, but there's absolutely nothing in here that a Cleveland sports fan wouldn't already know. I suppose the younger you are, the better it might be, because you weren't around for a lot of the stuff. But Long is definitely "short" (har har) on details. This is mostly just a collection of news items.
(Also, the title is a bit misleading, in my opinion. It doesn't explain "Why Cleveland Sports Fans Deserve to Be Miserable." It explains why they are miserable, but the way it's worded makes it sound like the book will be a narrative that attmepts to justify the statement that Cleveland did something to bring this on itself. Nothing in here about that, just unrelated anecdotes that start and stop as if Long had just clipped them from newspaper columns.) Nothing particularly wrong with Curses. It's just unspectacular all around.

CURSES IS A COLLECTION OF FACTS AND ARTICLES THAT ARE ABOUT THE BAD LUCK AND BREAKS THAT HAVE BEFALLEN ALL THE MAJOR CLEVELAND SPORTS TEAMS OVER THE YEARS. THE LAST MAJOR CHAMPIONSHIP WAS 1964 FOR THE BROWNS. THE INDIANS LAST WORLD SERIES WIN WAS 1948 AND THE CAVS ARE NONE EVER. THE DEATH OF ERNIE DAVIS, CAREER SHORTENED INJURY TO HERB SCORE, JOSE MESA CHOKE, ALL THESE ARE IN THIS BOOK. IF YOU FOLLOWED CLEVELAND SPORTS FOR MANY YEARS, THIS IS A MUST READ. AS OF THIS DATE THE ONLY HOPE FOR CLEVELAND IS THE CAVS WHO ARE HAVING A VERY STRONG SEASON AND WILL BE IN THE PLAYOFFS. THE BROWNS SEEM TO TO BE IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION WITH HIRING OF MIKE HOLMGREN. THE INDIANS ARE IN A YOUTH AND CHEAP STAGE RIGHT NOW AND HOPE IS FOR 2 YEARS OR MORE. EVEN OUR MINOR LEAGUE HOCKEY IS BARREN. THE LAST CHAMPIONSHIP WAS 1964 BY THE BARONS. MANY OTHER CITIES HAVE SUFFERED ALSO BUT CLEVELAND IS A NIGHTMARE FOR SPORTS FANS. I ENJOYED THIS BOOK AND RECOMMEND IT AS A NICE EASY FAST READ WITH ALOT OF GOOD FACTS AND STORIES.

Long Drought for Superbowl and the World Series!,

This review is from: Curses! Why Cleveland Sports Fans Deserve to Be Miserable: A Lifetime of Tough Breaks, Bad Luck, Goofs, Gaffes, and Blunders (Paperback)
The book was very interesting. It was a quite an experience to learn from, with the desire of failing to win a national championship. Being a Cleveland fan for 25 years, how much longer do we have to wait to win the superbowl. Remember 2 out to go to win the World Series. Watch out for those flying bottles, whoa did you see that! Yeah, I was there too!

Kenny Roda not a Cleveland Sports Fan,

Kenny Roda is a Steeler fan. Don't let him fool you in his review. He is a crummy Steeler fan who doesn't know one thing about sports suffering. He has seen his Pirates win the World Series, his Steelers win the Super Bowl, and his Penguins win the Stanley Cup.
Listen to WTAM. WKNR sucks. |
