Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

The riff-harsh rock of Rye Coalition’s first three albums harkened back to early-nineties grunge, when the then-teenaged rock-star wannabees from New Jersey soaked up all that was Seattle. So it was far from a shocker to find ex-Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl at the production controls of this, the band’s fourth record, and an equal gimme that this one is crafted more toward Grohl’s obsession for riotous 1970s anthems then anything out of his pre-star days. While "Pussyfootin’" blasts out of the gates in disjointed White Stripes’ style, the 11 songs that follow owe more to Jimmy Page’s monolithic metal ("Vietnam Veterinarian," "Between an I-Roc & a Hard Place") and the three-chord recklessness of Angus Young ("Burn the Masters" and "Cigarette Catastrophe"). Vocalist Ralph Cuseglio splits the two-guitar strike with a decisive guttural rasp, fashioned by Grohl into that familiar and frenetic Foo Fighters’ shriek. Not as promising as 1999’s Lipstick Gamemight have indicated, but an aggressive, hard-rock effort nonetheless. --Scott Holter

From the Artist

Rye Coalition will return next month with a new album, "Curses" due April 18 via Gern Blandsten. Produced by Nirvana/Foo Fighters principal Dave Grohl, it is the rock act's first full-length effort since 2002's Steve Albini-produced "On Top."

"We had a lot more time to do this one," drummer Dave Leto tells Billboard.com. "Before, we had to cut stuff in five days, but because Grohl was behind us, we got into a big time studio in L.A. for two months."

The result is a 12-song throwback to the vintage hard rock of Black Sabbath (particularly on "Young Yellers"), Kiss ("Secret Heat") and Motley Crue ("Pussyfootin'"). Much like Rye Coalition's other releases, the guitar-drenched, fast-paced songs on "Curses" never lack in humor.

"It's just who we are -- we like to keep it funny. We've got some pretty stupid song titles," Leto says, referring to tracks like "Between an I-ROC & a Hard Place" and "Vietnam Veterinarian."

The album's name was inspired by several years of label difficulties the band endured while working on the set, which was intended for release via DreamWorks. "Curses" was then bounced back and forth between Universal, Geffen and Interscope before winding up on Gern Blandsten, which released Rye Coalition's first two albums.

"We had to go through a lot of contract crap to get the record back," Leto admits. "Our A&R guy was gone and [Interscope] was just going to shelve it or do nothing with it if we didn't pay them this six-figure [fee]. We finally got it back for free."

The New Jersey-based quintet, which formed out of friendships dating back to grade school, is also releasing an hour-long companion DVD with behind-the-scenes footage of the making of the album. "It's weird being on screen," Leto says. "I guess we made it because it's really funny and in 20 years I'll show it to my kids." BILLBOARD - Katie Hasty, N.Y.

5.0 out of 5 stars post modern post retro post, May 3, 2006

here's a great review from Spin.com: "Rye Coalition's fattened-up AC/DC-sleaze schtick has been the same since the beginning, but it's taken Dave Grohl, who produced Curses, to get their mojo flowing. With songcraft that encompasses some of Grohl's best come-ons -- thundering, sassy, and hedonistic -- it seems with Curses the zeitgeist has finally hit. While Rye Coalition's anthemic and indulgent cuts sport titles that might read too cheeky to take seriously ("Tequila Mockingbird (P.T.E.)," "Vietnam Veterinarian," and "Between an I-Roc and a Hard Place"), the band lather on balls-out garage-glam with enough impressive sincerity that the tracks never sound stupid. Plus, they've got the earnestness to light up arenas, or, at least, Camaros for backseat escapades."
