Easy to put together.

The thumb screws to tighten the rack's mounting system are tough on the hands but could be easily replaced with a double nut to be tightened by ratchet.

I was torn between the Yakima load warrior or the Curt cargo rack. The Yakima was twice the price of the Curt. Having already spent good money on the Yakima base rack I decided to give the Curt cargo rack a shot. It was delivered to my house in its original packaging. It arrived in great shape unlike other stuff that I have received in the past. It was a pretty big box and it was very light. I thought it was going to be heavy but wasn't. I also ordered the extension and the Curt netting. It was pretty easy to set everything up.

The extension snapped to the cargo rack easily and all the holes lined up well. The cargo rack with the extension was still light and easy to carry by one person. It took me about 30 minutes to put this together and place it on my Honda Fit. The mounting brackets are little confusing at first. I followed the picture on the directions but it was wrong. I ended up playing with it for 10 minutes and finally figured it out.

The build quality of the rack is excellent and it is comparable to the Yakima load warrior. You pretty much pay for the name. I love Yakima but I am glad I purchased the Curt cargo rack. It was way more affordable and it looks just as good as the Yakima. I always have people come up to me or at a red light asking me about the cargo basket. I thought the rack was going to be to big but it fit perfect for my little car.

I was anxious to try the rack with gear on. Finally I was able to take a camping trip with the family. Before the rack I had 5 passengers. 4 adults and 1 toddler. The trunk of my car was filled to capacity and every nook and cranny was stuffed with gear. The ride to our camping destination usually wasn't comfortable.

I received the rack recently and ound it to be good quality and good looking for what it is. I don't really understand the previous reviewer's complaint. The rack is black and looks like a black rack. I'm not sure what else is expected. As far as quality, I would not say it is upper end, but I would reserve that designation for a heavy duty rack designed to hold a lot of weight. This is a light duty rack that will hold suitcases camping equipment etc. just fine. A nice aspect of this is that it is light enough that it is easy to put on and take off if you do not want it on your vehicle all of the time. Plus, for the price, I think it is an exceptional buy so long as you buy it within its use constraints.

Follow-up: I have had the rack for a few months now and am very happy with it. I have found that there is a little added wind noice when driving, but it is only noticable if there is no other sound in the car (which is very seldom). I like it enough that I recently purchased the rack extender. I have an Acadia and just the basic rack fits fine, but looks a little funny to me because it is fairly short compared to the length of the roof. Getting the extension makes it look better fitted and provides more room for carrying items.

I'm very happy I was able to find this product cheaper via Amazon, and while I'm extremely happy with the buying/shipping experience, the product itself is lacking in quality.

I have experience working in a company that uses steel and aluminum for manufacturing, so my opinion may be biased. The welds on this rack are absolutely terrible. The front portion of the rack (where the fairing goes) has two tubes bent at a 45 degree angle; I'm assuming to add structural support as well as support for the fairing. However, one of the tubes protrudes further than the other which causes the fairing to bow outward on one side. Minor, I know, but it's a defect. Again, the welds are terrible. I can't stress that enough. I'm definitely going to sand down all the welds and redo them, or I might purchase some high-grade epoxy to add structural support.

Another detail - I purchased the rack extension (product 18117 I think...) and that fit very nicely. Unfortunately, the gap between the extension and either half of the original rack makes it impossible to place the mounting brackets in those positions.

IMPORTANT - with regards to the mounting hardware to attach it to your cross bars. Before you even attempt to mount it, go purchase some nylon locking nuts (I think I purchased 6 x 100mm...) and washers to replace the worthless hand-screw-thingys they give you. You'll also need to purchase a deep socket (roughly $3). TRUST ME, THIS WILL SAVE YOUR HANDS. All in all, I bought $8 worth of nuts, washers, and a deep socket, and I attached this contraption in roughly 15 minutes.

Other than the welds and sub-par mounting gear, it's a nice rack (couldn't help myself). But, I can only give it 3 stars...

I installed this rack today (Curt 18115 Roof Mounted Cargo Rack without the extension) and I will share my first impressions. (Bought on Amazon and arrived 5 days sooner than expected. I am in SoCal). I have a stock 2001 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4x4.

The mounting bolts are oriented so they stick up past the floor plane of the basket and this is not good. I am going to see if I might be able to flip the mounts somehow but I don't think that will be possible. The bolts and knobs/nuts could easily damage items up there or get damaged by items up there.
Also, the nuts have a plastic molded knob to facilitate tooless installation but these are really hard to tighten. REALLY hard. I jury rigged a drill with hole bit, 2 pieces of wood and a pair of vice grips all duct taped together to get them tightened. I have hand problems which only made matters worse. I'm not sure if I could have new u-bolts made that are shorter or something. I might look into this option. The rack bolts are so tight and difficult that if I decide to remove it in between trips or whatever I will leave it attached to the factory cross bars and remove them and the rack all together.

The rack looks just ok IMO. I don't think it looks bad but I also don't think it really adds to the look of the vehicle very much. I also do not think it looks or feels cheap to be clear.

Wind noise- I thought I had my sunroof open a bit at first. It is noticeable but not annoying.

BUT- I bought it to be able to store gas cans and other lighter/bulky items and it is plenty strong and fairly light and so for the intended purpose I am happy. Most other rack systems are way overpriced IMO and I was not willing to spend 5 to 7 times as much for an open air or enclosed rack.

I will report back w pics or other useful info if I come up with any.
I don't know how to post pics in the review so here are some pics on Flickr:
