Fascinating Look at Custer,

This review is from: The Custer Album: A Pictorial Biography of George Armstrong Custer (Paperback)
The Custer Album gives a good background of George Armstrong Custer's early life and education as well as his military career before the Battle at the Little Bighorn. But I bought it for the pictures and these did not disappoint. There are many, many pictures of Custer in his uniform leading me to believe he was a vain man. There are also pictures of his wife, brothers, nephew, father, sister, and even a couple of pictures of modern day great nephews, In addition, there are photos of various other men who served with Custer at one time or another, some of whom died with him at the last stand. Native Americans--scouts for Custer as well as those who fought against him--are pictured. But among my favorite photos are those of Custer's two horses, Vic and Dandy, and the photo of Comanche, Captain Keogh's horse that survived the battle. Though I began the book thinking Custer was vain and stupid for having led his men into battle while he was vastly outgunned and outnumbered, I came away with the conclusion that the events that led to the battle were much more complex than I'd thought. This is an interesting book, A must read for Custer fans and even for those who hold a negative opinion of this interesting man.

In my studies of George Armstrong Custer he carried self love and narcissism to new heights. I've always wondered where this son of a poor farmer came up with the money to pay photographers to document his relatively short life. He rates amongst the strange military leaders America has breed including MacArthur, Patton, and Halsey. Even with the photographic documentation, Custer's life still has many unexplained gaps and mysteries.
