Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Hatch, an advertising producer for whom Custer is a great hobby, has produced a useful guide to assist readers in putting the vast amount of relevant information about the Battle of the Little Bighorn into manageable perspective. Among the topics Hatch covers in the alphabetical list are people; places; social, political, cultural, and historical events of the times; Plains Indian customs and culture; and military topics. Hatch has carefully written the entries, taking into account recent research on the battle, and includes cross references to other entries and suggestions for further study where appropriate. Also included are maps showing troop movements, views of the battlefield, and portraits of military and Native figures. Topics not significant enough to warrant their own entry may be located through the extensive index. While there are many works about Custer and Bighorn, this is the first reference work devoted entirely to him, the battle, and the literature. It belongs in all libraries with special collections on Custer. Other libraries with strong user demand on this topic will also want this book.?Stephen H. Peters, Northern Michigan Univ.
