4.0 out of 5 stars versatile film-music collection, February 9, 2006
This review is from: In Custody: A Film By Ismail Merchant (Audio CD)
This is a soundtrack album for a highly acclaimed Indian/Urdu 'arthouse' Merchant-Ivory movie.
There are many surprising and quirky elements to this recording that may test the patience of 'pure classical' lovers. Zakir's playing is colorful and restrained throughout with moods swinging for nostalgic, flippant and deeply poetic. the vocals tracks are quite beautiful and i wish i could understand the ghazal/ language of the first track but no matter, the feeling is undeniable. If you don't mind the snapshot nature of film music, then you will find this is moving, spirited and fun, conjuring up all sorts of curious and exotic images. Well worth adding to your collection.
