Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

It is possible to go through the whole process of making a sweater, only to find that it doesn’t fit quite right. Ohrenstein guides readers through making sweaters that fit, deflating common fears along the way. She doesn’t just want you to follow instructions; she wants you to grasp the technique of how sweaters are constructed, with the idea that once you understand the concept, you can alter, customize, and even change the project to suit your fit and style. This is not for beginners but, rather, for crocheters who want to take their craft to the next level in combining creativity with technical construction. Included are 10 sweater designs with alterations. Each pattern includes discussion of technique and lessons, with emphasis on understanding how the garment is put together and including helpful side notes. Challenge yourself under the caring guidance of this designer, writer, teacher, and professional singer (also author of Crochet Insider’s Passion for Fashion, 2008, and Creating Crochet Fabric, 2010, and founder-editor of crochetinsider.com). --Lani Smith

Review

“Crocheting a sweater can seem daunting. There's the problem of matching gauge, getting a nicely draping fabric, knowing what size to make, and getting it to fit just right. Designer Dora Ohrenstein understands this, and in Custom Crocheted Sweaters, she takes the crocheter step-by-step through an overview of sweater construction, incluing understanding fit, reading patterns, and schematics, and shaping, altering, and finishing.” --Crochet! Magazine

5.0 out of 5 stars Coup for Crocheters Everywhere February 19, 2012
Format:Paperback
This book on crocheted garments to fit custom measurements is truly one of the most timely manuals for crocheters. With the renaissance of crochet on the runways of Paris, Milan, and New York, and elsewhere, and even in some ready-to-wear pieces, crochet that is flattering, delicate, and elegant has arrived back in the limelight. Dora Ohrenstein has penned a valuable resource for crocheters who aren't interested in sifting through similar books written for knitters to figure out what to do in crochet. Besides, crochet's unique architecture and behaviour with yarns consisting of different fibres that don't work up the same way knitting does require the specific treatment and discussion of crochet fabric and how it fits the body.
While some say this book is not for beginners, I would argue that it is essential for beginners to read this. Dora's pedagogical writing style is not stuffy, nor difficult to understand. Her voice clearly comes out through the text and her patience, and step by step instructions take many if not most of the misgivings a beginner might have and make them fade away.
I am tired of hearing how crocheters are afraid to try new things, that knitters are braver and more inquisitive...posh! Custom Crocheted Sweaters is a book that meets the needs of those crocheters who have been looking for answers to questions about fit and fashion for the last few decades and have come up empty and frustrated in their search. And any person new to the craft and art of crochet will have the benefit that they won't have to wait for decades to find out how to turn out a finished piece that fits them and makes them satisfied with their efforts and time investment.
The patterns in this book are timeless classics and the technique and advice that Dora shares with us apply well to these patterns, but also to the myriad of new, current patterns which her peer designers are producing at the moment. I can't wait to see the different versions that crocheters will begin to share in guilds, stitching groups, at yarn stores, and online.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Crochet Book December 27, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
My copy of Dora's latest book arrived today. I have taken two of Dora's online classes and have all of her previous books. For anyone serious about creating beautiful crochet garments that fit.....Dora's books are a must have.
Every sweater in this book is a classic. I am most impressed with the early sections that truly walk the student through the sweater construction process. Each sweater focuses on a technique that will have carry over to all the future items a crocheter might create. I can hardly wait to work my way through the book creating each item.
Kudos to Dora...may she never stop creating!
