4.0 out of 5 stars Just A Good, Solid Rock Album, October 16, 2006
This review is from: Cut & Move (Audio CD)
Despite being constantly labeled as a Christian act and as the band of ex-Full Devil Jacket frontman, Josh Brown, many people forget one important thing about Day Of Fire: They simply rock. An engaging voice, meaningful lyrics and accomplished musicianship are what these guys are all about, and their second album, despite being a bit of a departure from the debut, demonstrates this beautifully.

Sounds Like:

The Good:

- The production is tight and Josh's voice is as prominant as ever.

- All ten tracks are worth a listen.

- The album doesn't just appeal to Christians (just ask me!).

The Bad:

- It's kinda short.

- As is the case with many Christian bands, the lyrics can get a bit too preachy at moments.

Hits: "Hole In My Hand" "Love" "Run" and "Wake Me."

Misses: "Reborn," closing out the album on a rather awkward note.

Future: I think this album is just as good as it's predecessor, so it shouldn't alienate too many fans.

Personally: I don't care to mix religion with music, but Day Of Fire do it well so who am I to criticize? I wish they would get more radioplay, as they are one of the more interesting "new" rocks bands.

Best Listened To When: You realize Full Devil Jacket are gone forever.

4.0 out of 5 stars Day of Fire not for everyone, July 27, 2006

If you like to rock hard and profess to be a Christian, then Day of Fire's Cut and Move is for you. If you don't like hard rock, then you won't give the album a positive review. It's unfair to give this album 1 star just because you don't like that brand of music. This album's uplifting lyrics and pounding beat will appeal to not only Christians but all lovers of rock music. This is what rock music should be, uplifting, not depressing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brutally Honest Lyrics that Cut, Driving Rock Music that Moves, June 7, 2006
By
Susan Prince (Humboldt, TN United States) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Cut & Move (Audio CD)
Rock music with sizzling electric guitar, and tight bass lines. This is hard, solid rock music with incessant, driving drumming, rhthmic guitars and driving bass.

Day of Fire = rock music, yet points you to The Rock.

With their sophomore release "Cut & Move", Day of Fire cuts their niche in Christian rock music even deeper and moves to the top of the charts with songs like "Love", "Frustrating" and "Run".

With one Dove Award (Rock Album of the Year 2005) under their belt and a Grammy nomination for best Gospel Rock Album (2005), Day of Fire is emerging as a powerful force in Christian Music. Their brand of hard rock is straight ahead fist pumpin', head bangin' rock that carries a message of hope and grace through aggressive lyrics and massive, heavy guitar work.

From dayoffire.com:

"With music that pounds the body and soul, Day of Fire's "Cut & Move" deals with cutting yourself away from the failures of yesterday, leaving behind the burdens of the past, and moving into the future," according to lead singer Josh Brown."

Josh Brown, the high energy, humble, and charismatic lead singer of Day of Fire has an awesome testimony that chronicles his days leading the heavy metal group Full Devil Jacket. With his first band, Brown was heavy into the secular rock scene, opening for bands such as Creed and Nickelback. He was a heroin addict and came very close to death from an overdose, but was able to recover through a drug rehabilitation program. While working on the second Full Devil Jacket album, Brown turned his life over to Christ, and left the music industry. A few years later in his hometown of Jackson, TN, he started Day of Fire with his friend Gregg Hionis. He unabashedly proclaims Christ as his Savior and spreads the message of hope, grace and love at the live shows. (If you ever get the chance, go see this band perform live. Brown has an uncanny ability to energize a crowd! Just go!) Brown is an amazing front man for the band, and a gifted, passionate mouthpiece for Jesus Christ.

"Cut & Move" clocks in at just over 32 minutes, possibly disappointingly short for some who always want more, but what it really means is that there are no "filler" tracks.

Much of "Cut & Move" is raw and not overly produced, it is your basic bare bones rock and roll music with no "fluff" at all. Day of Fire uses their brand of rock music as a platform to carry their message to the masses, and to audiences all over the world, including Germany, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand and South America. They are making new fans everywhere they perform with their contagious and unquenchable energy.

The CD leads off with the song "Love", which isn't a sappy love ballad, but a brutal cry for love. Brown screams a desperate plea "Where is Love?" while singing intensely honest lyrics from the perspective of those experiencing shattered homes, suicide attempts, cries for attention from someone, just anyone, even the dispatcher on the other end of a 911 call. It simply decries "everyone wants to be loved".

"Run" is a fast-paced, caffeinated-charged, driving rock tune that is full of energy with the drums and bass beating a relentlessly steady pulse. Brown sings about running the race with perseverance, the struggle to run against the world and the determination it takes to win.

The album is filled with equally intense fist pumping rock songs such as the title track "Cut and Move" that is pumped out through six metal strings and the bass drum that lays down the solid beat. Brown screams with a controlled-strain in his voice the chorus "hey...yey...yey...yey...eeee...yey...Show me the way out of this hole" and answers with "The Voice through the door said `I alone hold the key to your peace'." During the live show, Brown explains that in those moments of deep desperation and feeling that there is no way out, that in fact, all you have to do is knock on the door. Jesus will answer your cries.

A fan favorite from the CD is "Hole in My Hand" which is a tune that is reminiscent of Day of Fire's first major hit with "Cornerstone". With a slow ballad tempo and a melodic hook that beckons the live audiences to sing along at the top of their lungs while swaying to and fro, "Hole in My Hand" is destined to speak to the heart of many listeners. It has an almost stadium-anthem sound and says "With a hole in my hand, and a strength to my stand, with a flame in my heart, burn in me again".

"Reborn" closes out this album which is solid through and through. The triple meter of the main chorus has a sound that is somewhat beatlesque, from the Abbey Road days, with a hint of George Harrison guitar work poking through. There is a switching between meters in this highly polished turn as it alternates between a heavy rock waltz and an all out head bangin' assault with a screamin' guitar solo, and great punctuating riffs throughout. "Wake to the work in the fields, the harvest has come...sun is setting on the hill...Day is soon done." This songs says "Christians, we have very important work to do."

Day of Fire will soon be a recognizable name to all Christian rock music fans everywhere, and most likely any fan of rock music period. There is no denying that these guys know how to rock! Their music is high energy, fast-paced, fist-pumping, and head banging, but there is no way to miss Who the source of all their energy is.
