Gives me goosebumps! This band rocks - killer riffs, insane guitar tones and hooks that won't leave your head until you get that labotomy//

3.0 out of 5 stars They have the basic elements present to become a decent metal band
The Good
A driving guitar riff blends with a chunky bass riff to propel "Spurs". Vocalist Brian Grosz has a deep, almost spoken delivery. The Good
A driving guitar riff blends with a chunky bass riff to propel "Spurs". Vocalist Brian Grosz has a deep, almost spoken delivery. The bass tends to dominate the chord changes as Grosz handles both vox and guitar duties. There are some great vocal melodies and guitar improvisation on "Hard t Let Go". Drummer Dave Valle takes center stage on "Natasha" with his rhythmic pattern changes. Chugga-chugga riffage controls the tempo of "Thumbscrews". The long, indulgent instrumental opening of "Three Body Problem" will take you back twenty years when that technique was the norm..

The Bad
The production is a little rough around the edges, but that's expected of a recording at this level. You can tell that the group is just starting out.

The Verdict
Dogs of Winter have the basic elements present to become a decent metal band. I think a band loses a lot of fullness (for lack of a better word) when their vocalist doubles as the guitar player. You can exactly lay down killer licks while you're singing. All that aside, Dogs of Winter do come off a little amateurish on their debut EP, but still manage to delivery a good punch here and there.

5.0 out of 5 stars For those who are about to rock..., November 8, 2005
This review is from: Cut Down To The Quick (Audio CD)
What can one say about "Cut Down to the Quick," the debut EP from Dogs of Winter, other than IT ROCKS? In this day of pre-packaged and posturing "rock" bands, Dogs of Winter surfs above the crowd with a hard-hitting, spine-tingling and well-made five-song collection of sonic gems. Do yourself a favor and buy this EP.
