4.0 out of 5 stars Cut Loose-Paul Rodgers
On his first solo outing after leaving Bad Company in 1983, Paul really comes into his own. He plays every instrument on this album himself, and he sounds refreshed to be liberated from the confines of a band atmosphere. True, he may not be as great on every instrument as his Bad Company/The Firm/et al counterparts, and the production leaves something to be desired, but...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Bad, But Not His Best
Cut Loose, Paul Rodgers' first record after leaving Bad Company, finds Paul playing every instrument. The thing of it is, he's pretty good at all of them. However, he's not great at any of them. As one would expect, though, the vocals are incredible. This album servers a a good mid-point between the Bad Co. material, and the later Firm material. The second Firm album,...

The second Firm album, Mean Business, actually contains one of the best tracks off this album, Live In Peace. Overall a good album, but Paul would prove to be capable of much more...

4.0 out of 5 stars Cut Loose-Paul Rodgers, October 11, 2001

On his first solo outing after leaving Bad Company in 1983, Paul really comes into his own. He plays every instrument on this album himself, and he sounds refreshed to be liberated from the confines of a band atmosphere. True, he may not be as great on every instrument as his Bad Company/The Firm/et al counterparts, and the production leaves something to be desired, but this album is definitely worth purchasing. The opener, "Fragile", is a scorching rocker, followed by the free-spirited title track. Paul does sound overjoyed to be "Cut Loose" indeed. The album also features the world-peace plea "Live In Peace", so befitting for today, which he later rearranged with The Firm for their 1986 release, "Mean Business". The song has more impact here, however, due to a sparser arrangement. Make no mistake, Paul isn't making no massive musical statement here, just good music. This is classic rock at its best. Unfortunately for Paul, the age of new wave swept this album under the carpet when it was released in 1983. Now, almost 20 years later, it sounds remarkably refreshing in spite of its own limitations.

4.0 out of 5 stars No Bonus Tracks?, August 19, 2008
By
Working Man (Atlanta, Georgia) - See all my reviews
I own the original release of this CD and I am wondering where the bonus material is? The albums itself is quite good and often forgotten gem in Paul Rodgers long and legendary career. Cut Loose, Fragile and Northwinds stand out for me. You'll also find Live in Peace which was later recorded by the Firm and Superstar Woman a solo version of the Bad Company song released on the Original Bad Company two disc compilation.

The album is really solid from beginning to end but my original version doesn't have the best production so this deluxe edition should be an improvement. If only there were some bonus tracks then it would be worth repurchasing it for me. If you don't already own this and you're a Bad Company or Paul Rodgers fan then I recommend you go ahead and get it.

The recording is quite simple "sounds like it was made at home"which adds to the charm. there are only two so so songs "fragile" and "cut loose" the rest are awesome...if you like mr. rodgers BUY THIS DISC NOW! ALL RIGHT...

4.0 out of 5 stars Paul Rodgers doing what he does best--rocking out could have used a full band but good true solo effort, June 16, 2011
"Cut Loose" literally finally gave Paul Rodgers the chance to do everything himself. That's a good thing and a bad thing. This more low fi album like Paul McCartney's two "solo" albums ("McCartney" and "McCartney II")features Rodgers playing all the instruments, writing, singing and producing everything himself. For those looking for a super polished album like the Bad Copany releases you'll need to adjust your expectations. Although professionally recorded it's simplified much like the blues that inspired Rodgers in the first place.

There are a couple of tracks where I kept thinking to myself "man I wish Simon Kirke was playing drums here" or "a great bass player would be really good here". Paul's accomplished on all instruments but some of his former collaborators had a unique feel and Paul's playing is more utiliarian more than anything else.

The remaster doesn't sound signficantly different than the original album (which was nicely mastered in the first place) which is the case with most of the Friday Music reissues. It sounds like it hasn't been messed with in the mastering for good or bad. The songs are extremely good just be aware that this doesn't have the polish of one of his band's studio albums and you'll enjoy it.

There are no bonus tracks, no demos which would have been nice to have on CD.

Paul Rodgers posesses one of the all-time greatest voices in rock music. He plays every instrument on his 1st solo effort since leaving Bad Company. Although he is not terrifc at any one, he certainly can hold is own on all of them. There are some great songs on this disc and you can go wrong with Paul Rodgers singing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good songs.. but bad production, May 26, 2000
This review is from: Cut Loose (Audio CD)
If you like Bad co or Paul rodgers..then get this one. I wish the production was a bit better, it does not match earlier BAD CO. sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rodgers, September 1, 2009
Paul Podgers . Some great sounding tunes on this LP . I stumbled onto another of his creations "The Law" also with some great sounding tunes . A Band put together recently in 2008 . I stocked up on his early 70s band "Free" which also has many great sounding tunes . I saw Bad Company in 1977 "Burnin' Sky" tour still have stub . Well enough tunes will add great sounds to a day of Tunes .
