Book Description

November 15, 2007
The latest addition to the Dark Horse horror line is this chilling original graphic novel from writer and publisher Mike Richardson (The Secret, Cravan). Twentysomething Meagan Walters regains consciousness and finds herself locked in an empty room of an old house. She's bleeding from the back of her head, and has no memory of where the wound came from - she'd been at a club with some friends... left angrily... was she abducted? When Meagan peers through the door's keyhole, she starts to suspect that her captor isn't quite human...

4.0 out of 5 stars Overlooked Gem, December 6, 2007
This review is from: Cut (Paperback)
If you like horror films, you will enjoy Cut. The thoughtful art work and careful design of the monster create a wonderful atmosohere and the dialouge is well written. High production values all the way around. Cut's greatest shortcoming is the plot, which goes where every other horror film or story has gone before. The ending is predictable and the victims are all pretty women who end up running around a haunted house half-dressed.

However, where the plot of "Cut" takes it's readers is not as important as how it takes them there. A scary, edge-of-your-seat and enjoyable read. Especially for the low $9.95 price.

When I was looking for Mignola projects, this Scott A. book popped up and surprised me for two reasons. First, I had never heard of it. Since Hellboy and BPRD have had such success, this doesn't happen all that often. This lead me to a second thought and, interestingly, to one false conclusion. "Perhaps it isn't that good." Still, I remembered the lesson of "Baltimore, The Last Vampire" and how well that story came across and I ordered it. This led me to my second reason : It was interestingly good. It had the art style I expected, a nice little horror gig that made me want to continue, and it had it all in a budget that I found reasonable. It simply flew underneath the radar and, in an age where more and more literature finds itself coming out, I could see how that could happen.

I do not really want to give anything away when talking about the story, so I'll keep this brief. The wording is somewhat minimal but not overly so, the tale is not a bulked up beast but instead seems a thing from a nightmare planted when short stories still roamed the land, and it made me feel like I had gotten my money and then some out of the read. I love the artwork: the way the shadows and the light tell a story all to themselves is sometimes reason enough to want to own something. I enjoyed the horror because horror is something that is a gift unto itself and few people know how to make it a little pulpy and a little terrible and know just when to bring what curtain down. And then there's the whole addiction to a favored artist - if I have to admit one thing, it is a bias toward the artwork that I have a fondness for. That, and a good story - it is the model that all books should aspire to.

As another reviewer put it, this is an overlooked gem and is worth checking out. If you need more, look up some of the shots that can be found of the book and see what you think, and know that you have that beautiful Hellboy look when you check out the pages. If that sounds like your cup of proverbial tea, then sip it.

The only problem is that, in less than an hour, you will want more because all stories that are short do that to a reader. Still, it is worth the time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Scary like it should be. Short like it shouldn't., July 10, 2011
This review is from: Cut (Paperback)
I was very tempted to give this title a 3 star rating(well, 3 1/2), but it WAS scary, and that's what I was looking for with this little(and it REALLY is little both in size and length) graphic novel.

The compact, digest size of the book didn't really bother me. I have several graphic novels around this size. I am the proud owner of several Vertigo Crime books(which are slightly bigger but relatively close), and I love those little gems. No, it's not the size of the book that bothers me. The length of the book, however, does. I felt like this had the potential to be something really special. The story is simple but solid. It follows in the footsteps of most movies that fall into this genre of horror story(I don't want to give too much away, so I won't say what that genre is). The tale is allowed to play out nicely; the emphasis being on the visual imagery, with somewhat limited yet effective dialogue that moves the story along at a heartpounding speed. The artwork, which I'd describe as somewhat of a cross between Mike Mignola, Eric Powell and Matt Wagner, really delivers the goods. The whole look and feel(in large part due to the Master of Colors, Dave Stewart) lends itself perfectly to the dark and terrifyingly creepy story this aims to be. When the captor was revealed, I felt the terror that I'd hoped for when I bought this graphic novel. But it's the hints of the captor(such as the eye seen through the keyhole, among other horrific scenes alluding to who/what has captured the girls) that really keep you on the edge of your seat, eyes searching each panel with a "let me see; wait, I'm afraid to look" kind of fervor. Bottom line: This is good, scary fun!

The problem, which I briefly alluded to above, is the length of the story. For all the scariness that this graphic novel exudes, it could have exuded even more if it were only longer. As I stated above, the story works. It works because it scares you. And that's what you want in a horror story. But, with a little more meat on the bones, it could have been more than just a good, scary and fun horror story. It could have been a GREAT, scary and fun horror story! I was so disappointed that the story was over so quickly. That's why I thought about giving this only 3 or 3 1/2 stars. But then I thought that maybe I'm just being greedy. Could be, because I really did like this one. I just wanted the horror to last a little longer. Is that so bad? I'm giving it 4 stars. But next time, I pray Mike Richardson crafts a longer story; one that has the same breakneck pace and nasty thrills and chills, only this time ends up being somewhere around 144 pages or more. Preferably more.
