Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The Cut-Ups are back to prove the impossible: that they have become even cooler and crazier than in books past. Chagrined when their mothers enroll them in ballroom dancing classes, Spud and Joe's fear of being spotted by the other boys is dispelled when they find that they have been forced into the same class. When the boys learn of an upcoming talent contest (the prize is a lunar walker just like Captain Kideo's on TV), they vie to be partnered with Mary Frances Hooley, the undeniable queen of ballroom dancing--despite her resemblance to a Sumo wrestler. Things look grim when Mary Frances chooses another partner and "the boys lay around like sick cats." In a surprise ending characteristic of this droll duo, Spud and Joe triumph once again. Unmitigated lunacy runs rampant in this madcap tale, peopled with the familiar boxy kids and fleabag cats that Marshall's fans have come to know and love. Ages 3-8.

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-3-- Spud Jenkins and Joe Turner, that delightful duo of derring-do, are back. This time those "true cut-ups" have a real test of their dignity before them--their mothers are actually sending them to dance class. And even though they declare they'd rather eat bugs, they go. They are spotted right away as a "couple of cut-ups" and their nemesis, Mary Frances Hooley, is in the class. Of course, she loves dancing. "And I'm very good," she declares. But will she be good enough to win Captain Kideo's big talent contest and snare the coveted lunar walker? Will she choose Joe or Spud to be her partner? Or will the boys be forced to win the contest on their own? With all the usual twists and turns found in his first three adventures of the Cut-Ups, Marshall answers all of these questions with humorously understated text. His wonderfully funny illustrations underscore the story perfectly. All the gang make appearances, adding to the fun. Marshall has done it again in this book that delights and entertains. 4.0 out of 5 stars Too good for kids, February 6, 2000
By A Customer
This is one of the most used books on our shelf. The kids love to hear it and I love to read it. Anyone who has suffered through unwanted childhood lessons (piano, dance, etc) will relate to the cut-ups predicament.
