5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, langorous, sentimental, sad, and magical August 7, 2012
Format:Audio CD
"I've always contained your desire to hurt me", sings Antony over a gentle piano and majestic strings, and just like that, I am his. I have had a love/hate relationship with this man's music over the years--fascinated by his unique and lovely voice, alternately frustrated and enchanted but by his excesses--but here in a symphonic setting, he becomes all that I had hoped to hear. He is intimate here, in full glory, voice slowly unfolding like an orchid, vibrato present but restrained, his sometimes sobbing diction held in check. The symphony is perfect here as well, lovely and warm. All these songs are songs that I know well now (except for the incredible title track), and I am glad for that, because I am free to focus on his singing and the arrangements, allowing the music to wrap around me in a langorous, sensual haze. This haze is interrupted by the 7 minute discussion of how we are all interrelated with the phases of the moon called "Future Feminism"--listening to that once was interesting, but I won't want to hear it every time I listen to this record. That quirk is easily fixed through the joy of playlists, but I think that this is his most satisfying record overall. If you have teetered on the edge of buying an Antony and the Johnsons record, fear not, this is the one that will keep you, fascinate you, enchant you, hypnotize you, and yes, make you grateful for the beauty that is all around. Masterful and wonderful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Emotionally intelligent August 8, 2012

I have been a fan of Antony's since I first heard his music a couple years back. I think the most accurate term I could use to describe Antony's work is " emotionally intelligent ".
Antony is fealess in describing emotion and yet poetic at the same time. Hauntingly so. Antony's work for me is more to be experienced than analyzed.
Beautiful .
Thank you for your offering Antony

4.0 out of 5 stars A change of heart August 16, 2012
By D
Format:Audio CD
I'll be honest: I didn't want to love this album. And when I first listened to the samples of these songs, I didn't. I thought it sounded so boring that I almost didn't purchase it at all. I'm very glad I changed my mind.

My opinion of Antony is that his first album was his best by far, and that as his music has become less bombastic and more "earth goddess", it has lost a lot of its power. I'm still a little bitter that his sound has changed so much, and his last studio album didn't do much for me, but somehow the raw beauty of these live performances works its magic on me anyway. It's delicate but carries a lot of emotion, and Antony's voice sounds beautiful.

I still miss the days of the powerhouse songs like "Divine", but this live collection is a lot better than Antony's last studio album, and possibly the one before that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Graphic Package (Music is great too) August 24, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The cover for this is a superb quality gatefold mini-LP sleeve, as good as the best Japanese packaging.

The music, of course is excellent. Live vocal performances.

Antony & The Johnsons makes it again. This live album sounds like a studio-album. Clear, clear sound, magic orchestration, and important lyrics. Just listen and enjoy.
