1.0 out of 5 stars ..sounds like a cow run over by a lawnmover
A hell of a lot of screaming and extremely fast drumming. Maybe someone was being raped in the studio?

After three spectacular demos (and the loss of frontman Piat (a.k.a. Antaeus), whom gave the name to the band) it was about time to release full length number one! Antaeus's 'Cut Your Flesh and Worship Satan' is a breath of fresh air in a genre that has since begun to die (well, at least the origins are being ignored). By molding brooding and hash aggressive black metal riffs and vocals with the coldness of Nordic black metal Antaeus have crafted extreme metal anthems for a new generation of followers. Why do I speak so highly of this achievement? Well there is a major lack of true black metal bands (i.e. legends like Burzum and Carpathian Forest), but sadly an abundence of pop-black metal bulls hit (i.e. Cradle of Filth, specifically their new album). MkM vocals are perfectly scretched, one of the best black metal vocalists right now! The dual guitars by Set and Thorgon absolutely shred. The pounding of Sagoth's bass and Storm's drums (and who also does the flawless sampling) gives one the feeling like their head is going to explode! The grim production of this album is another aspect of black metal that seems to have been long forgotten. The raw sound gives the appropriate atmosphere of this record. Standout tracks are, well, all of them. Every single track is worth checking out (my personal favorites being "Bleeding Blasphemy" and "Daemon"). I know you hear this a lot, but this album is a must have for black metal fans. Along with Godless North's 'Summon the Age of Supremacy' and Vorkreist's 'Sabbathacal Flesh Possession', Anateus's first full length is another great addition to your own personal black metal catalouge!

5.0 out of 5 stars Battering and majestic music, March 17, 2002
This review is from: Cut Your Flesh & Worship Satan (Audio CD)
Antaeus create a raging blur cloaked in fractured pauses and screamingly nihilistic riffing, and within this they place a dark and emotional melody. Songs direct instant statements of coherence. Thrashing and noise-infested music uses resonance like a Norwegian band but song structures and rhythms are borrowed from death metal or grindcore. Racing melodic guitars and insanely destroyed vocals accompany mechanistic drumming in the ensuing explosion of sound. Song dynamics are extreme with inner revolutions expanding to consume dogmatic structures. Riffs are motion oriented but mechanical and abrupt with more dissonant melody than American bands. Both subtle and confrontational emotions permeate this cryptic release of compiled EPs.

Antaeus is one of the most violent, raw, Blackmetal bands that hail from France. The speed and ferocity at which they play is unbelievable. This is no-nonsense,straight-up in your face BM that does not let up until the last song is over. The vocals range from shrieks to deathish, low growls, only heighten the listening experience. Definitely worth buying.

Antaeus... this underground band from France made one of the MOST EXTREME BM records ever , bad production (that's a positive point in TRUE RAW BM),excellent speed on the drums and guitars , great guitar riifs influenced by Darkthrone and Early Mayhem , fantastic vocals and a totally straight on massacre! FANTASTIC!
if you really like the PURE BM so.. don't wait anymore just buy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nihil Chaos, April 14, 2006
This review is from: Cut Your Flesh & Worship Satan (Audio CD)
Antaeus are one of those bands that have a love-hate relationship with the underground scene. Dismissed as boring and monotonous by some, hailed as masters by others, they seem to be the Deeds of Flesh of BM. And, not unlike DoF, they appear to have at least one very good album under their belt.

Let's get the sole negative out of the way right now - the drum production. Overly trebly and/or overly prominent; it's a little harsh to these ears. This is a shame, as the drumming provides a militant relentlessness which drives the album all the way to the abyss without mercy.

Warped, purposeful melodies wash over the battering ram that is the drums, with fairly typical Abbath-esque shroaks (that's right, shroaks) over the top. Simple really, but aren't all the great BM bands? Compositionally this is excellent, the direction is obviously fully-formulated and followed purposefully and coherently. This chaotic war machine certainly draws Averse Sefira comparisons in its nature, being derived somewhat from Immortal, but it replaces all of that band's calculated and mechanical warlike glory with a more frantic, swirling, violent whirlpool of nihilism, sucking you in on a more primal level.

Antaeus rebel against the occultist, cheaply-produced metal of fellow countrymen the LLN, and I daresay I enjoy this more than anything from that scene. Cut your flesh and worship Satan. No don't, just buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars ANTAEUS RULE!, December 28, 2000
This review is from: Cut Your Flesh & Worship Satan (Audio CD)
The unholy WAR mongers from Antaeus have released a satanic holocaust metal album at it's finest! This is black metal purity.. Definitely one of the best releases of 2000! Raw, killer riffs, possessed and hateful vocals, and drums that are lighting quick.. The drummer Storm really lives up to his name.. The guitars are crazy and sound like a cross between a chainsaw and a racing car engine.. Vocalist MkM has some sick vocals.. This is evil, brilliant stuff.. 8 tracks in total some real highlights.. 'InnerWAR' , 'Seventh Ceremony' , 'Devotee' , 'Bleeding Blasphmey' .. Hell, all the tracks on here are killer.. This even has the tracks from the mCD "Rekording 2000-1" and a track from the Eternal Majesty split demo.. What are you waiting for, stop reading this review and get off your bum and go buy this!

After listening to Antaeus new debut cd, I was totally blown away by their raw, uncompromising, go for the throat style of BM. This cd will please many Mayhem fans, as this has many similarities to early Mayhem. From beginning to end, the onslaught never lets up. This album is not for COF,Dimmu Borgir fans mind you. If you want brutality and speed, get Antaeus "Cut your flesh and Worship satan".This is one of the most brutal new BM bands around in any country. Definitely a must have album.
