Perhaps the greatest concept album ever made, October 30, 2001
It might not be my favorite Olsen Twins album, but it gets my highest rating compared to any of their others. Other than the closing, short and isolated track "Mom's Song (We Think We'll Keep You)", which is too obviously self-referential to their previous album "Brother For Sale, 50 Cents" (BFS,50C), every song on this album is great. The lyrical musings of Ashley's "Double Up" opens the album and you just know your ears are in for a pre-pubescent pud-poppin' treat as soon as it starts to play. That masterwork is followed by Mary-Kate's "I Am the Cute One" (IAtC1), a brilliant song. Yet even though it shares the album's title, this is not her best effort on this shining disc of glory. That honor goes to the profoundly introspective number, "I Am A Kid", which might even be better than its sister tracks on BFS,50C "The New Kid" and "Identical Twins". There's no better tune to listen to on a cold, late winter morning than this one; especially if you, too, are a kid! It's the best song on the whole album. I cannot overstate this. The best song. Ashley is not to be shown up, however, as she also adds some dandies to IAtC1. My favorite is "No One Tells The President What To Do", which has to be one of the most upbeat and humorous songs ever written about a mass murderer. The tune was actually started during the BFS,50C sessions. In fact, you can see the band's first take of it in the BFS,50C movie. Uncle Joey also adds some of his best bass playing on this album, especially on the songs "One Buffalo, Two Buffali", "Don't Let Your Mom Go Shopping" and "We Love To Scream". Even their cover of "Yakety Yak" out-strips the famous Coasters rendition.
In all, I Am The Cute One just makes you wonder just where these two might tread in their future formative years. They just seem to top themselves with each new recording and if you consider that no other band or artist does it better than them, it really will be a blow to rock music the day they die two horrible, horrible deaths in an anthrax factory explosion bomb. But I think I've said too much.
