4.0 out of 5 stars Honey Flash!, April 4, 2007
This review is from: Cutie Honey (DVD)
Cutie Honey does not get naked. That might not seem very relevant, but if you are familiar at all with the original Go Nagai "Cutie Honey" series, then you know that Cutie Honey is all about getting naked, and with gravia idol Eriko Sato playing the title role, a woman who has shown time and time again that she has no problem getting naked, it is even more surprising. During her famous "Honey Flash" sequence, it shifts to a CG animated figure, and even that doesn't get naked. Now, with that out of the way, we can talk about the movie.

This is definitely not going to be a film for everyone, but it is a lot of fun. "Cutie Honey" really is just a big cartoon, featuring live people. There is no attempt whatsoever to make it modern or gutsy. Director Hideaki Anno, best know for his phenomenal anime series "Neon Genisis Evangelion", has decided to through all of his angst out the window and go straight for the pinkest vision of cuteness that he can possibly muster.

Eriko Sato works her way through an impossible number of cute costumes, or just runs around in her underwear, all the while being light and naively unaware of her own attributes. Her Cutie Honey suit isn't the famous original, but it is even more pink and works well. The villains are over the top, at about the same level as a Sentai Power Rangers show. The acting is just good enough to make sure everyone is having a good time, and the fight scenes are a blast. Both remind me a lot of Kabuki theater, where everything is completely exaggerated beyond any believability, and that works in the context. Sure, there is some plot stitched here and there, to give the whole thing a a start and a finish, but it isn't really all that important. Superstar Koda Kumi powers her way through the catchy Cutie Honey theme song, and I dare you not to catch yourself humming along even if you can't understand the Japanese.

If all this sounds like a blast to you, then you are going to love "Cutie Honey". Shut off your brain and allow the pink to wash over you. However, if you demand even the slightest bit of sense out of a film, then you are probably going to hate it. Its up to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining movie, May 26, 2007
This review is from: Cutie Honey (Limited Edition) (DVD)
If you're looking for a good time, this is it. Great fun, humor, action, heart, and Cutie Honey style. I felt satisfied with it and had a smile on my face through most of it. Someone on here complained about it being full screen...? I don't know, mine had the black lines at the top and bottom so I assumed it was wide screen. Regardless, I didn't feel like I was missing anything.

3.0 out of 5 stars Rice Balls and Honey, June 6, 2008
By
This review is from: Cutie Honey (DVD)
Although the director Anno Hideaki is best known for the work he has done for the animated series Neon Genesis Evangelion, and before that Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, he has also directed a few live action films including the Murakami Ryu short story based Love and Pop (1998) and Ritual (2000), which was written by and stars Steven Seagal's daughter Fujitani Ayako. Both of these films, although they both have their rough spots, are well done and they display Anno's keen camerawork and his use of angles that are rarely seen in other directors' films. Therefore, when I heard that Anno was directing a live action film based on Nagai Go's manga/anime series Cutie Honey, I was not so much pleased as disappointed because I thought the director was backtracking instead of moving forward with his fascinating, experimental film style.

Cutie Honey follows the life of Kisaragi Honey, a young woman whose naïve, childlike personality and high energy makes her more annoying than attractive to those around her, albeit her figure, ample chest, and penchant for running around in little more than her bra and panties does draw a bit of attention. Earning a living as an office girl, Honey also is a super heroine able to morph her appearance into whatever she desires with choices such as a nurse or a police woman being her favorites. One day, Cutie Honey encounters a nefarious group of villains called Panther Claw led by a bizarre being called Golden Claw who has kidnapped her beloved uncle, Professor Utsugi, who had aided her father in giving Cutie Honey her powers. After an amazing fight, Cutey Honey defeats Golden Claw, but, unfortunately, her uncle is still kidnapped. However, Honey meets two friends who will aid her in her search for her uncle, the ultra-serious NSA agent Aki Natsuko and the cool reporter Hayami Seiji. Will Cutie Honey be able to save her uncle from the baddies, and will she be able to eat enough rice balls so she does not have to run outside in her undies?

Cutie Honey is nothing more than an animated action film performed by human beings, meaning that its action is ludicrous and that its storyline is puerile and vapid. However, for what it lacks in content, it attempts to make up in fun, and that is what Cutie Honey is, an empty, fun-filled film that can probably be only tolerated once. Also, although the cartoon version of Cutey Honey features quite a bit of nudity and Cutey Honey's actress is a famed bikini model with admirable "assets" there is no nudity in the film, so this filmic version of Cutie Honey can be enjoyed by the entire family.
