3.0 out of 5 stars A surprisingly tactical beat 'em up, with pirates, August 26, 2010
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Cutthroat Island (Video Game)
I used to play this game once or twice as a kid. Of course, with being a kid, some things are perceived differently. I liked Streets of Rage, and subsequently I liked this. It's not exactly as polished as Golden Axe... One of the first things to note is, while Acclaim at least made it look very identical to the SNES version, the music rarely ever changes, consisting of a select few tracks. And you will hear a musical track throughout 5 or 6 levels, so while the gameplay may have a surprisingly decent bit of variety, the music doesn't. Like Batman Returns, or Pirates of Dark Water, some portions will be a straight-out beat 'em up; other portions will restrict you to one axis of movement. The game isn't that hard at first, but gets mind-numbingly crowded with things that can easily kill you later on. Many of the stages are unfortunately quite short, but Acclaim did put in a bit of effort in the later levels of platforming. I will not say the game's the best. Heck, you have to survive through quite a few levels with a decent amount of lives, or there is no way you'll even have one continue. In this respect, it's an endurance game. And don't let the box art fool you, the game is quite cartoony looking. If you can get past the shortcomings, and the fact that Acclaim didn't do it as much justice as a downport from the SNES version, you can still get a kick out of it once you get the controls down. A 6-button pad is recommended, if you wish to learn how to time your blocking. If it were not for the slight variety they put into the levels, I'd flat-out say that this is just another really mediocre beat 'em up with swords. A slash 'em up, rather. But I won't. This could only be recommended to people with some patience on them.
