5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding & Intelligent Music-making!, June 26, 2001
By
This review is from: Cutthroat Standards & Black Pop (Audio CD)
I cannot recommend this album enough -- outstanding songwriting with intense, intelligent edges. The Brechtian, Third-Reich attitude made so explicit in "Have I Got a Deal for You" floats across every song -- even the samba-soaked "Sunday is the Day for Love" -- until you realize just how deep, dark and troubling things really are. Repeated listenings will get you past the beautiful arrangements and Abby's marvelous voice and upriver to Mr. Kurtz. Brava, Abby Travis, I hope you get the recognition and wide audience you deserve!

5.0 out of 5 stars There are 13 fabulous Songs on this CD!!, February 14, 2001
By
This review is from: Cutthroat Standards & Black Pop (Audio CD)
Hi First I want to clarify the amount of songs on this CD. There is over 60 minutes of music on "Cutthroat Standards & Black Pop" and 13 songs!! (I don't know why there are only 4 listed) Here's what the press has said:

"this sultry songstress is redefining retro-cool." -Request

"Impress your friends when Abby Travis gets big 10 months from now"

-Alternative Press

"a Brecht-Weill epiphany" - The Washington Post

"She's one of those artists who can do anything-like other weird, uncommercial acts such as Madonna or Prince. Got vision? Get her."

-HITS

"Conjuring images of mink sliding from bare shoulders and a dead-dry martini in a chromium-plated coctail bar, her music is sweet as poison. The production is flawless...Remarkable in every way, and highly recommended"

-Mean Street

"Imagine a smoky, mid-1920s speakeasy, a shapely alto crooning ironic love songs as she drapes herself along the length of the piano. Then she kicks you in the nuts."

-Philadelphia Citypaper

"Travis' slinky solo turn can't be beat"

-Boston Weekly Din

"a torchy lounge diva..Beatle-esque Pop"

-The Los Angeles Times

"This is an excellent standards-like ablum for those who hate standards and sappy sentiment"

-newbeats.com

(I work for the label so I'd rather post these unbaised oppinions)

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything is indeed Wonderful about this album, November 7, 2000
This review is from: Cutthroat Standards & Black Pop (Audio CD)
One of the best and most varied uses of instruments since the fab four plopped down on their bottoms and plucked, strummed, and crooned their way into a musical world. Most of the women I know wished they had a gun. To be honest I wouldn't mind a few of them having one. Bold and brash Abby topping 1997's Foundation album. Taking direct aim at those weasels who think they're f**king great, Abby proves yet agian that she is not a part but a complete artist. I may not agree that Sunday is the day for love, Tuesday would be my choice, but I will say that I like the sleek loungy jazzy sound of it. Track thirteen might not bring a smile to our impatiant friends who like to think everyday is merry methmas. I on the other hand got a kick out of over twenty-two minutes of acapella harmonics. Hangover Flower is the new theme song for all those lost souls who pray to Saint. Ides. Overall the album remains cosistantly fresh and moody. Thank you Abby. Thank you.

Such a good CD by an awesome artist. This CD combines mixtures of Swing, Rock, Cabaret style music, and other genres that fit perfectly into 12 songs.

If you want to get the bad concept of pop out your head, go out and get some Black Pop for yourself, instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Abby Travis Superstar, June 1, 2001
This review is from: Cutthroat Standards & Black Pop (Audio CD)
This is the most complete, self realized CD I bought since "OK Computer". The lyrics and production are just beautiful. Abby is such a great singer. I'm glad to see such a beautiful woman possess so much talent and depth. I love the cover art as well. The whole package is really art driven. My favorite songs are "Bottom of the Sea", "Hangover Flower" and "Everything's Wonderful".

I love Abby Travis. She is the ultimate goth chick. Beautiful vocals put to cynical and quite humourous lyrics. She combines sexy cabaret music with glam rock to some sort of new and unusual twist. A fabulous album. Buy this.
