Doris Day twinkles and shines !!!,

Cuttin' Capers/Bright and Shiny is a strong Doris Day twofer CD that has all the tracks from two of Doris' great record albums. This CD is a must-have for Doris Day fans; and the sound is excellent. The artwork is very well done as well."Cuttin' Capers" starts the CD with Doris singing her heart out--and she never sounded better! Doris sings this with great enthusiasm and it enhances her performance; the big band style arrangement works wonders for this tune as well. "Steppin' Out With My Baby" features Doris singing with a marvelous male chorus; she never misses a beat regardless of the tempo changes. Doris aces this effortlessly and I am very impressed! Listen also for Doris on "Makin' Whoopee;" Eddie Cantor loved to sing this little ol' tune and Doris makes it all her own with some tempo changes and her excellent voice. The horns make this number shine even more! "Let's Take A Walk Around The Block" is a great Harold Arlen song that Doris sings very well--Arlen must have loved it! "Let's Take A Walk Around The Block" puts Doris squarely front and center--right where she belongs! "I'm Sitting On Top Of The World" is a great number that Doris sings with panache; the music that goes with her vocals fits in perfectly to make "I'm Sitting On Top Of The World" a most memorable number. "Fit As A Fiddle (And Ready For Love)" is a number that only Doris could deliver so well as she does here; and there's also "Let's Fly Away." "Let's Fly Away" showcases Doris' fine vocal talents--the music is great but make no mistake about it--this is Doris' number. "Singin' In The Rain" comes from the movie of the same name; and Doris delivers this with a rich, warm and vibrant voice. Doris was born to sing these tunes! "Happy Talk" comes from South Pacific and Doris does great justice to this show tune with her excellent vocal prowess. The music benefits from some mighty fine percussion as well. "Make Someone Happy" has a great arrangement as Doris slows down the tempo to infuse this tune with a lot of romantic flavor. Doris' voice is as clear as a bell and she aces this without any trouble whatsoever. "On The Sunny Side Of The Street" is yet another number that showcases Doris' excellent singing talent; her slower than usual tempo for this number enhances its natural beauty. Overall, this is one of Doris' best CDs out there; and her fans will love this one! People who enjoy classic pop vocals will love this album as well.

Happy music of the highest quality,

Doris recorded many different types of song but she certainly knew how to have fun. The two albums paired on this twofer - Cutting capers from 1958 and Bright and shiny from 1961 - are both packed with upbeat, happy songs with no hint of sadness anywhere, as a look at the song titles shows. Both albums really swing from start to finish. There are some classic songs here, including Happy talk (from South Pacific), Stepping out with my baby (an Irving Berlin song popularised by Fred Astaire), two Cole Porter songs (Riding high and Let's fly away), Singing in the rain, Making whoopee and On the sunny side of the street. Some singers struggle with the type of material to be found here, but Doris is in her element - her enthusiasm is infectious. If you are feeling sad, listening to this will help to cheer you up.

Swingy, Bright & Cheery day !,
This review is from: Cuttin Capers / Bright & Shiny (Audio CD)
On a platter these albums are happy trips through some well known songs of the day. Sung with a swingy feel they do reminisce of good old Frank Sinatra. Although the material isn't tailor made for Doris's style it does gleam with nice versions of "Steppin' out with my baby", "Let's take a walk around the block", "Singin' in the rain", "Happy Talk", "Make someone happy" & "On the sunny side of the street". These albums make pleasant listening ! Stephen Munns (...)

While I just added this to my collection of Doris Day Cd's. I have to say this is probably one of the best. I enjoy every song on this album and her voice is at its very best. I have taken a lot of flack for being a Doris Day fan, but what can I say, no one can lay a track down as beautifully as she does. When she sings a song she sings it with so much feeling that you can actually feel the emotion. I would recommend any Doris Day Cd, but I really recommend this one! If you have not listened to her Christmas Cd you have not heard the most absoultely beautiful Christmas album you will ever hear. Don't go through life without experiencing this Gem...I highly highly recommend this Cd as well...Thanks for reading!!

Another Favorite!!!,

Wow....just when I think I've chosen my favorite Doris Day album, along comes another gem!!! This one is absolutely WONDERFUL!! Which leads me to the conclusion that it is just impossible to choose a "favorite" Doris Day album--they all are so special and unique :)I just love how I can go to my Doris Day CD library and choose an album that fits my mood of the moment. This one happened to come in the mail today, just when I needed to be cheered up after receiving some sobering news about a family member's health. Of course, that is not to say that listening to Doris Day can take away a person's problems (LOL); but it's impossible not to feel better after listening to Doris Day sing "I'm Sitting On Top of the World", "On the Sunny Side of the Street", "Clap Yo' Hands", etc. :) Miss Day has said that, while she loved acting, singing was actually what she enjoyed the most. This comes through loud and clear in all of her recordings, whatever type of song she was singing. This album is a JOY to listen to, and I feel it is a MUST HAVE for Doris Day fans :) ENJOY--and be happy!!!

What a great album!,
This review is from: Cuttin Capers / Bright & Shiny (Audio CD)
This is a must have for Day fans. She is in great voice (when is she not?) and the musical instruments that back her are just right. It is all orchestrated perfectly. There is a nice blend. As the orchestras back her they do not overpower or undermine her. These two albums are jewals, and Doris expresses the lyrics that I don't think many artists are capable of. She gets right into a song and lives that song from start to finish. It is as though she is singing that song specifically to you. She took her singing seriously and it shows. I hope you enjoy the album just as much as I do.

Day delights at her bubbly best!,

Collected here are two of Doris Day's finest albums. CUTTIN' CAPERS (recorded in 1958) presents Day in a soft jazz-infused setting with Frank DeVol's orchestra. I've loved the CUTTIN' CAPERS album ever since I found a beaten-up LP copy at a flea market many, many years ago! Things start off fabulously with the title track, which is filled with DeVol's trademark riffs and eccentric melody lines. Other delights include "I'm Sitting on Top of the World", "I Feel Like a Feather in the Breeze" (which segues nicely into "Let's Fly Away"), and a playful, sly "Makin' Whoopee".Recorded in 1961, BRIGHT AND SHINY definitely lives up to the promise of it's title. The emphasis is on the upbeat, with "Happy Talk", "Ridin' High", "Clap Yo' Hands", and "Gotta Feelin'" amongst the best of the tunestack. "I Want to Be Happy" was originally covered by Day on the soundtrack of her 1950 movie TEA FOR TWO. She's merrily accompanied by Neal Hefti and his orchestra. A no-brainer for Day's fans.
