Book Description

June 1, 2006
The small team of policemen never even identified the dead girl and, for the officers involved, her murder came to symbolize everything that was wrong with the city—a haphazard sprawl of commerce and indifference. Four months on, that group is in disarray. Sean has disappeared into the city's black heart and not returned, and Martin is separated from his job, his wife, and his friends. But then a simple note from his ex-partner forces him to re-enter an investigation he'd rather forget. "I found her," it says. The search leads him from one side of the city to the other in a downward spiral of violence and pain, and drags him into the orbit of the things that are really wrong with the city—the eight brothers rumored by legend to have control over everything.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Mosby (The 50/50 Killer) takes readers into the most sinister neighborhoods of a crowded British city in this dark thriller. Former police officer Martin is seeking the murderer of Alison Sheldon. A horrific video turns up with details of the brutal killing, but Martin's partner, Sean, has disappeared, hampering the investigation. Soon Martin finds himself hunting the associates of criminal Timothy Hartley, murdered by Martin and his fellow officers. The clues evolve in a slow and sinister manner as Martin discovers why Sean is missing and how Sheldon and other victims are connected to Hartley. Personal interactions set this tale apart from other thrillers, as Martin's fractured relationship with his estranged wife and his continued obsession with a female cop run throughout the novel and play a major part in the surprising conclusion. Review

'Steve Mosby has invented a suitably dark and uneasy world for his excellent noir thriller. ... Mosby has a pleasingly consistent style that manages to encompass intense emotion, intellectual musings and vicious violence. Not an easy task. 4.0 out of 5 stars Unusual and original, September 18, 2007
By
This review is from: The Cutting Crew (Paperback)
A relatively slow starter that somehow gets hold of you so you have to keep reading until the whole story has been unravelled.

Although it dips into different genres I would class it as a dark thriller with a futuristic feel, almost set in the here and now, but not quite. The strange names of the city's districts were more than a little surreal and the fact that armed police were the norm added to the futeristic vibes.

There was also a mythical air to the story which seemed accentuated by the almost gladiator style annual boxing event in the city. Along with the bad cops and mafia style underworld who always seemed to be one step ahead it made for a very unusual yet strangely compelling novel.

1.0 out of 5 stars A good tale gone awry, January 17, 2010
By
This review is from: The Cutting Crew (Paperback)
Not long into this book I was finding it an enjoyable read and thought I'd discovered a new author to add to my list of favourites. As it progressed a few things happened which I thought would be explained later but to my dismay it just got worse and what was building as a good thriller had me lamenting the fact I wouldn't be able to get a refund on my purchase or recover the time I had wasted.
