Book Description

October 4, 2006
On the Cutting Edge presents a series of true stories providing the first account of many of the major programs and projects that have made the last sixty years an era of remarkable progress in the aerospace arena. Robert F. Brodsky, an internationally known scientist, engineer, and teacher, brings a unique perspective to this book, since in each of the world-changing events discussed, he was a firsthand observer or participant. Written in an accessible style, Brodsky's account begins with the start of the computer and atomic ages and progresses chronologically through the subsequent ages of guided missiles and space.

Through a series of interrelated narratives, readers learn about the conquest of the sonic barrier, why the space age started when it did, details of a rescue from a space station, how astronautics became a legitimate academic discipline, the inevitable rise of the hydrogen economy spurred by fusion, and the great aerospace events of the past century. On the Cutting Edge also includes descriptions of little-known historical events, such as the use of the atom bomb by the United States in Mexico, and of the many technological developments of the 1960s that are just now coming to fruition.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Brodsky gives an insider's view of everything from the creation and fixing of the first externally carried A-Bomb (the Mark 7) to the inception of the Space Age to how astronautics became an accredited curriculum to Brodsky's visions of a hydrogen-fuel based economy in the future. An engaging chronicle of deadly weapons, technological marvels, and the quirky human personalities behind the military and space age science that transformed the modern world, accessible to readers of all backgrounds and highly recommended." --Paul T. Vogel, Midwest Book Review

"Brodsky's story is compelling in part because of the important time span it covers, which he calls 'the glory days of engineering.' But it shouldn't be read as an exercise in nostalgia, particularly in a time and place where there is an increasing shortage and an increasing need for engineers. You can't read a single page of On the Cutting Edge without encountering the euphoria of discovery that is at the heart of the profession."--Mark McDermott , Easy Reader

More About the Author

Biography

Following his 'final' retirement from Industry and Academia in 1996, the Dr. Robert F. Brodsky began documenting high lights from his long and distinguished career in the aerospace engineering field, and in traditional jazz music. He has now published four books and several short stories - all aimed at showing how exciting a career in both music and in engineering could be; as the successive ages of atomic weapons, missiles, space, and computers whizzed by.
Dr. RF (Bob) Brodsky, retired from TRW Space and Technology (1988) and from the University of Southern California's Aerospace Engineering Department (1996), is a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and a national Outstanding Aerospace Educator Award winner. His 46 year career in aerospace consisted of approximately equal parts of working in industry and university teaching. His first job was at Sandia Corporation in Albuquerque, where he was responsible for the aerodynamic design of most of our early atomic bombs and the first H-bomb. He was Chief of Aerodynamics at Convair/Pomona (Calif.) which specialized in guided missilery ; Chief Engineer of Space-General in Los Angeles and Paris-based Manager of European Operations for Aerojet-General working in advanced space programs; and before joining TRW, where he was Director of Technology Planning at their Redondo Beach, California, campus, he was Professor and Head of the Aerospace Engineering Department at Iowa State University in Ames.
He has a BME degree from Cornell University, an MS Math from the University of New Mexico, an M.Aeron.E. from NYU, and a Doctor of Science in Engineering degree from NYU (1950). He has been listed in "Who's Who in America" since the 60's after being the subject of an article in TIME magazine. This is the 1963 article which introduced the idea of the Space Lifeboat for rescue from a space station. He is also listed in "Who's Who in - American Education;- in Science and Engineering; and - in the World".
As of the end of 2010, he has published 4 books: "On the Cutting Edge"; "Songs My Mother Never Sang To Me";"A Pilgrim Muddles Through"; and "The World in a Jug". He hopes to publish his 5th book, "Catch a Rocket Plane" in Spring 2011. The author has a few copies of "Songs My Mother Never Sang To Me" available for loan - rfoxbro@aol.com.You can examine its cover by calling it up on Amazon.com and clicking on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An engaging chronicle of deadly weapons, technological marvels, and the quirky human personalities, May 7, 2007
This review is from: On the Cutting Edge: Tales of a Cold War Engineer at the Dawn of the Nuclear, Guided Missile, Computer, and Space Ages (Paperback)
Written by engineer, educator, and arms race/spacecraft design pioneer Dr. Robert F. Brodsky, On the Cutting Edge: Tales of a Cold War Engineer at the Dawn of the Nuclear, Guided Missile, Computer and Space Ages is a collection of true tales of the author's professional experiences. Active in the atomic and space race from 1950 to 1988, and not really retired up to even the present day, Brodsky gives an insider's view of everything from the creation and fixing of the first externally carried A-Bomb (the Mark 7) to the inception of the Space Age to how astronautics became an accredited curriculum to Brodsky's visions of a hydrogen-fuel based economy in the future. An engaging chronicle of deadly weapons, technological marvels, and the quirky human personalities behind the military and space age science that transformed the modern world, accessible to readers of all backgrounds and highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars a notable pioneer, January 14, 2007
This review is from: On the Cutting Edge: Tales of a Cold War Engineer at the Dawn of the Nuclear, Guided Missile, Computer, and Space Ages (Paperback)
The book is a collection of anecdotes and snippets from Brodsky's long professional life, commencing during World War 2 and proceeding past the end of the Cold War. He gives an insider's look at what it was like to work in the American defense industry. Notably the aerospace milieu of southern California. But also in the nuclear weapons program at Sandia, New Mexico. Having worked briefly at Los Alamos, but decades after he was at Sandia, his accounts brought back fond memories of New Mexico.

He was also involved in some of the earlier postwar uses of computers. Like programming ENIAC for the first Computational Fluid Dynamics calculations. A total dinosaur of a machine by current standards. But truly cutting edge at the time.

There is a brief mention of wind tunnel tests he did in Pasadena, Los Angeles. How times change. That wind tunnel building is now the south campus of the Arts Center College of Design. I was there recently for a reception. Few of the current students appreciate the history of that building, and its crucial contributions to the US war effort during World War 2, and later in the Cold War.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Tale Well Told, July 22, 2007
This review is from: On the Cutting Edge: Tales of a Cold War Engineer at the Dawn of the Nuclear, Guided Missile, Computer, and Space Ages (Paperback)
Very interesting and entertaining set of career experiences as told by one of the greatest engineer's ever. Probably not for everyone, but anyone who has been a part of the Aerospace industry would enjoy the telling of Dr. Bob's career. Well writen, articulate and informative. I purchased four more copies for gifts to young engineers that might write something similar in 50 or so years.
