Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Artists' books are, in some ways, similar to "installations"Athey're multi-media experiments, often constructed of unorthodox materials, and they draw upon a mix of disciplines (literature, photography, graphic arts, typography, painting, bookbinding, and papermaking). In this unconventional study, the Huberts investigate 40 fairly recent books quite seriously, examining their shapes and their use of materials, colors, images, and textAno matter how obscure, nonsensical, or deliberately illegible. Yet no biographical information is given about the artists, many of whom are French. And although the index is thorough, the bibliography lists several works that, curiously, seem to have nothing to do with the subject at hand (e.g., a treatise on magnetism from 1600). Only readers who are seriously interested in artists' books and willing to wade through dense prose will find anything of interest here. For specialized collections.AMargarete Gross, Chicago P.L.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Cutting Edge in Artist's books, December 19, 1999

This review is from: The Cutting Edge Of Reading: Artists' Books (Hardcover)
The Huberts have produced a rich and incisive study of the new artist's book, dealing with the many varieties of verbal/visual interaction being practised today. It also doubles as a reference book for anyone interested in how book artists produce their texts. Granary did a great production job as well.
