After reading this book , Steve Martorano is indeed the real life Rocky of South Philly ! The stories are very real , and it shows how a person can become successful when they believe in themselves ! Steve's book talks about real life experiences both good and bad ! When reading it ,one gets a true feeling of some of Steve's struggles and hardships , and how he easily could have taken a different path in life . The book has some great recipes that many of the Italian Americans in South Philly still use today ! This is the type of book ,that you want to keep close to your kitchen or family room, so that when friends and family come over they can pick it up and remanence about the good old days ! I highly recommend this book be purchased ,not only does it have great recipes , but it is a Great Success Story ! When done reading you will be saying Yo Cuzzz !

When you see such a strong person physically its hard to imagine the turmoil they have gone through in their lives. Steve took me on a journey into his life that I will never forget. This book hits every emotion, every nerve, every sense. It will make you laugh, cry and teach you how to cook at the same time. Its a easy read and worth every penny.

This manuscript is far more than a "cook book". As a matter of fact I wouldn't call it a "cook book". I would describe this book as an exposé; a brief window into the soul; a brief revelation into a life experience that includes our traditional South Philly Italian-American approach to preparing food.

To those seeking the traditional literary master piece, you may be disappointed. To those seeking a "cook book" with real Italian-American food elevated to an exciting level of presentation and taste; with life experiences written in a language articulated as if Steve were telling these stories to the guys on the corner; then you found a real treasure.

This book is a compilation of real memories, real people, and traditional Italian-American cooking. Fantastic!

To truly understand the content of this book the reader must not only read but feel the intimate fusion of Steve's life and its connection to the entire food experience as an important tradition in the Italian-American family living in South Philly.

Steve, through his words, his stories, his memories, brings to the surface this unseen connection, exposing his life and more importantly his soul to the reader. If you're not moved by this book you clearly missed its intent. You either didn't feel the emotions poured onto these pages or you're dead. My recommendation, read it again.

This book is an evolution of his life as well as his food. The chapters in this book portray the struggles, the revelations and the obstacles he experienced on his path to realizing a dream. This is an enduring and loving acknowledgement as well as a true testimony to his family and friends.

This is the first book of it's kind, a cook book/autobiography. It gives you the background story of a guy who could've easily turned the wrong way, growing up cooking for the Philly mobsters but then using this talent to become a successful business man and acclaimed restaurateur now cooking for the biggest celebrities in Hollywood. He doesn't hold back when it comes to telling stories of his family life. And how he took a smart business idea from doing a Godfather night at his dads place in the 70's, and made it a huge success in his restaurants today.
This book is a true testament to who Steve Martorano is and what he's about. Holding on to his dream and making it happen, taking the punches (like his idol Rocky Balboa)and never giving up. you will learn the about the man behind The Cafe Martorano brand and how he took his favorite passions; food, music and movies to turn it into a mecca for people who love to have a unique dining experience. Steve and Son spin and show their favorite movies while the patrons eat his world famous meatballs which he put "on the map" , a simple pizzarea item is now his specialty and rated "best in the world"...

His inspirational messages throughout the book will motivate you to find yourself or perhaps follow your dream of opening your own place or it can just inspire you to find the joy in cooking for family and friends, with SIMPLE COMFORT FOOD COOKING.
This book is a tribute to his mother/grandmother and their culture and Italian American values and what she gave her family from their love of food and amazing family secret recipes from her Sunday night dinners.

I have been to his restaurant in Fort Lauderdale,Fla., and the recipes are just as I watched him prepare them over the counter! If you saw this man in person, you would probably appreciate his life story much better! But, the stories, none the less, are as enjoyable and appealing as are the wonderful recipes in his book.....especially his meatballs.....to die for! Fa bene!

Chef Steve is great and so is his book!

You'll find recipes for his famous Italian dishes as well as a painfully honest account of his life growing up in South Philly that led to the life he enjoys today as a famed-chef, or as Steve humbly says, "a cook," of award-winning Italian cuisine.

You'll laugh, you'll cry, and most of all, you'll learn what makes Chef Steve's food so great!

I've met Chef Steve and have eaten at Cafe Martorano - Chef Steve is a class-act and so is his establishment.

Get the book, Cuz!
