Book Description

September 15, 2000
One of the essential artists of our time, Cy Twombly is known primarily for his paintings, but his lesser-known sculpture oeuvre is an important dimension of his work as an artist. This large-format publication reveals his extensive body of sculptural work. Inspired by Kurt Schwitters, Giacometti and Surrealist object art, some of his early assemblages date back to the 1950s. These pieces are composed of everyday found objects, which Twombly arranged in the vein of magical or fetishistic objects. Later he began to cover them with a uniform coat of white paint. Thus placed in a new formal context, the original meaning of the individual pieces is blurred, connecting them with a wide range of cultural references. Literature and music, landscape and plantlife are all evoked. Twombly's sculptures are always white, exuding both an odd, ethereal quality and an aura of timeless poetry.

About the Author

Born in 1928 in Lexington, Virginia, Twombly studied art at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston the Art Students League, New York and Black Mountain College in North Carolina. In the mid 1950s, following travels in Europe and Africa, Twombly emerged as a prominent figure among a group of artists working in New York that included Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns. In 1959, Twombly settled permanently in Italy. He has had numerous one-person exhibitions internationally and has been the subject of major retrospectives in both Europe and America. In 1995 the Cy Twombly Gallery, a collaboration of Dia Center for the Arts, the Menil Collection, Houston, and the artist, opened in Houston.

This review is from: Cy Twombly: Die Skulptur - The Sculpture (English and German Edition) (Hardcover)
Just happened to pick up this book at my local bookstore in Berkeley CA.... What a surprise! I appreciate art and especially sculpture, but now I have a real appreciation for Cy Twombly! I never really enjoyed his paintings too much (which is his most prominent art form), but this book and his sculpture has certainly given me another point of view... Very original photos of all different periods of his long life along with his sculpture.... many black and white... many photos taken by his friend Rauchenburg, Also lots of written info and photographs of early work etc. A good coffee table book or gift for any art afficanado.
