Product Description

Color: Blue

The Cyalume ChemLight is a blue military grade chemical light stick measuring 6" long, for providing instant 360 degree illumination, that can be seen up to a mile away for up to 8 hours in optimal conditions. The ChemLight is waterproof, non-toxic, and non-flammable. To activate the light stick, bend, snap and shake the tube. The light stick has a hook and gate top, for hanging or attaching the light. The ChemLight meets Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) and NATO Maintenance and Supply Agency (NAMSA) specifications, and National/NATO Stock Numbers (NSN) are printed on each product. Each light stick is individually foil-wrapped for protection from light and moisture, and has up to a four-year shelf life from date of manufacture.

The durable, waterproof, external body of the light stick is made from low density polyethylene (LDPE), and is phthalate free for safety. The internal illuminating chemical substance is non-toxic and non-flammable, and the components of the light stick are recyclable. The light stick floats in water and works best between 40 to 80 degrees F (4 to 27 degrees C), and although the light stick works at higher or lower temperatures, it is less effective in colder temperatures.

All sticks are tested at a temperature of 72 degrees F (22 degrees C) to determine the illumination duration. Each 10-degree C (50-degree F) increase or decrease in temperature doubles or halves the reaction rate, and therefore the brightness and duration. For example, the same light stick that emits approximately 30 lux (a unit that describes how much light is visible over a square meter) at 15 minutes after activation at 24 degrees C (75 degrees F) will be half as bright but glow twice as long at 14 degrees C (57 degrees F). At 34 degrees C (93 degrees F), the same light stick would be twice as bright, but glow half as long. Storage at elevated temperatures (above 120 degrees F or 49 degrees C) will decrease shelf life and start to soften the plastic tube, and increase the risk of a leak. Exposure to cold temperatures will not affect the light sticks if they are warmed above 40 degrees F (4.5 degrees C) before activation, unless they are frozen (which occurs at -15 to -20 degrees F, or -26 to -29 degrees C). Once light sticks have been frozen, they will still produce some light, but performance will not be as reliable. Humidity and atmospheric conditions do not affect the light sticks.

Light sticks are chemiluminescent substances in plastic tubes that provide hours of illumination in a number of safety, industrial, and military applications. Light sticks are waterproof, non-flammable, and non-sparking, which makes them useful in hazardous situations where sparks or flame could cause an explosion. Duration is determined by the chemistry of the formulation. Brightness is affected by temperature: the warmer the temperature, the brighter the light will appear. All sticks are tested at a temperature of 72 degrees F to determine the illumination duration. Viewing distance can be affected by temperature, moisture, and other elements. Exposure to direct sunlight can reduce shelf life and effectiveness.

Cyalume Technologies manufactures chemiluminescent products used for safety, industrial, and military applications. The company, founded in 1970 and headquartered in West Springfield, MA, makes products under ChemLight and SnapLight brands. ChemLight products meet military specifications, and the company meets ISO 9001 standards.

These simply work. Used them extensively in the military.

One thing I will add to your purchase consideration: the Cyalume SnapLight "Industrial" Grade Chemical Light Sticks lights are chemically very similar to these, but with a longer shelf-life. The "military grade" lights are formulated per DoD specification, and as such cannot take advantage of newer formulations.

In short: if you are buying the "Military Grade" lights because you think they are better somehow, they are not. They are the same brightness. As a matter of fact, according to the manufacturer the military versions have one year less shelf life (4 versus 5 years for the insustrial series). The higher price reflects the custom (older) formulation that the DoD specifies.

Source for this info: Cyalume Corporation.

So unless you are required to buy an NSN product, do yourself a favor and pay less for a longer shelf-life and get the industrial version of this same product:
Cyalume SnapLight Industrial Grade Chemical Light Sticks, Yellow, 12 Hour Duration (Pack of 10)

Hope this helps.

Color: White
I recently tested the Cyalume Military Grade white light sticks against the Cyalume Industrial Grade white light sticks. Result: there was no discernable difference in either light output or duration. It seems the only difference between the two is that the U.S. military, for reasons best known to it, requires a slightly different formulation for their light sticks. This formulation, however, is not even as good as the Industrial Grade formulation as the Industrial Grade formulation has a five-year shelf life while the Military Grade formulation has a four-year shelf life. Bottom line: The Military Grade version is a good light stick but not worth the 25% extra you pay over the Industrial Grade light stick which produces the same amount of light and lasts just as long. The Military Grade packaging does look cooler though.

I purchased a number of different glow sticks at various price points, and these are by far the best and brightest. Twice as bright as the cheaper ones, and longer lasting.

Also much more expensive, but for an emergency kit, worth the premium. I did a side-by-side test, this brand and 2 cheaper ones. At activation this one was clearly MUCH brighter than the other two. Twice as bright would not be a big stretch. An hour after activation, this one was just as bright, the cheapies had dimmed considerably. Not even a close race.

My ONLY complaint (besides the price) is that they are individually wrapped - which by itself isn't a bad thing, but the wrapper is awfully tough to open in full daylight. I can only imagine what it would be like in patch darkness. Something to think about if you're putting them somewhere you can easily reach them in the dark.

I've thrown a few of these into every emergency bag, kit, box and drawer that I have. After testing this Cyalume item against others listed on Amazon, I can report that these are brighter and last longer. Buy green for better ambient lighting. Buy yellow for better visibility from long-distances.

Red is good for marking different things, but not as bright as other colors. Industrial appeared just as bright as this Military grade one.

I compared the six colors in both Military and Industrial, see images for more information. Overall, I did not notice a significant difference between the Military and the Industrial grade. I do like that the wrappers on the Industrial ones show the color clearly, while the Military has only the name of the color. I've found that they last the time advertised, note that the white and blue ones are rated for less time than the others, 8 hours vs. 12. (There are other models with differences in brightness/duration). The brightest ones by my measures, were the Yellow and Green ones, followed by the Orange ones. Red, Blue, and White would not be bright enough to read a map; but are good for marking things in a campsite or elsewhere. Other uses: give each child a different color so you can locate them easier, marking different hiking or skiing trails, or use different color to locate first aid/water/etc..

No, literally cool. A chemical compound that is luminescent without heat. Imagine the applications of such a tool. Under water, in an explosive atmospheric environment, etc.

Of course I just had to pop one the day I got them after it got dark. These aren't your light sticks from your childhood. Those things would last a couple of hours at best before fading into nothingness. These, on the other hand, are quite bright. I could read my Kindle with it, although I wouldn't really recommend it, but what was (again) cool was the fact that twelve hours later, just like advertised, I could still read in otherwise total darkness. Sure, it had dimmed but they live up their advertisement and my expectations.

The box I ordered earlier this month was manufactured in Aug 2011 and have a four year shelf life. This is something you want to keep in mind if you're building your bugout bag or emergency kit. Off on a tangent, if that's what you're doing, then make sure to make a list of what's in your kit and list the expiration dates of everything in it and keep things rotated.

Anyway, store them out of sunlight and away from excessive heat (their words) and you'll be pleasantly surprised when you need emergency light and discover that the batteries in your flashlight died six weeks ago.
