Product Description

The Cyalume ultra high intensity flare alternative SnapLight is an orange industrial grade phthalate-free chemical light stick measuring 8” long, for providing instant 360 degree illumination, that can be seen up to a mile away for up to 30 minutes in optimal conditions. It also has a reflective strip, and a wire stand for positioning at an angle for better visibility. To activate the light stick, bend, snap and shake the tube. The SnapLight is waterproof, non-toxic, non-flammable, and emits no heat. This SnapLight meets Department of Transportation (DOT) non-hazardous standards, requires no permit for storage, and has up to a two-year shelf life from date of manufacture.

The durable, waterproof, external body of the light stick is made from low density polyethylene (LDPE), and is phthalate free for safety. The internal illuminating chemical substance is non-toxic and non-flammable, and the components of the light stick are recyclable. This SnapLight floats in water and has a specially designed illuminating substance that performs in warm, cold, wet and dry environments.

All sticks are tested at a temperature of 72 degrees F (22 degrees C) to determine the illumination duration. Each 10-degree C (50-degree F) increase or decrease in temperature doubles or halves the reaction rate, and therefore the brightness and duration. For example, the same light stick that emits approximately 30 lux (a unit that describes how much light is visible over a square meter) at 15 minutes after activation at 24 degrees C (75 degrees F), will be half as bright but glow twice as long at 14 degrees C (57 degrees F). At 34 degrees C (93 degrees F), the same light stick would be twice as bright, but glow half as long. Storage at elevated temperatures (above 120 degrees F or 49 degrees C) will decrease shelf life and start to soften the plastic tube, and increase the risk of a leak. Exposure to cold temperatures will not affect the light sticks if they are warmed above 40 degrees F (4.5 degrees C) before activation, unless they are frozen (which occurs at -15 to -20 degrees F, or -26 to -29 degrees C). Once light sticks have been frozen, they will still produce some light, but performance will not be as reliable. Humidity and atmospheric conditions do not affect the light sticks.

Light sticks are chemiluminescent substances in plastic tubes that provide hours of illumination in a number of safety, industrial, and military applications. Light sticks are waterproof and non-flammable, and non-sparking, which makes them useful in hazardous situations where sparks or flame could cause an explosion. Duration is determined by the chemistry of the formulation. Brightness is affected by temperature: the warmer the temperature, the brighter the light will appear. All sticks are tested at a temperature of 72 degrees F to determine the illumination duration. Viewing distance can be affected by temperature, moisture, and other elements. Exposure to direct sunlight can reduce shelf life and effectiveness.

Cyalume Technologies manufactures chemiluminescent products used for safety, industrial, and military applications. The company, founded in 1970 and headquartered in West Springfield, MA, makes products under ChemLight and SnapLight brands. ChemLight products meet military specifications, and the company meets ISO 9001 standards.

I saw the Cyalume SnapLight Flare Alternatives at an EMS/Fire Expo. I tried working with several vendors to obtain them, but for whatever reason, they never arrived or were never in stock when I checked back. Being able to order them online was a relief. These are essentially glow sticks on steroids. They are bright enough that the DOT (at least in Connecticut) considers them flare alternatives. If you are required to carry flares, these meet the requirement (at least in Connecticut, please check your own state's requirements). These units do have a limited shelf life (the ones I received expire just over two years from when they were received). That limited shelf life can be compared to regular flares that may be damaged by humidity, especially if they are stored in a damp trunk or external compartment on a rig). The Cyalume product is waterproof so being exposed to humidity will not be an issue. I volunteer with EMS, and I carry these in my POV for traffic control, and also for marking hard to find addresses. I carry one unit in the side pocket of my door, and for an address that is hard to find, I can activate it and just toss it at the end of the driveway to mark the way for the other responding units. Since there is no heat, you do not have to worry about where you place the unit (you can even put it on the roof of your car, but be careful the metal legs do not scratch the finish). Since there is no heat, you also eliminate the risk of burns from igniting and handling. Overall a great idea and a much safer way of making your scene safer.

I keep fresh sticks in my car for emergencies and I give them away to family and friends. The kids get the older sticks (2 or more years old are fair game). But, noticed that they don't have dates stamped on them. This minor enhancement would not only make it easier to verify that they are fresh, but it would compel owners to replace them from time to time.

The main reason for the high price is that these are quite bright and suitable for emergency use. They don't burn out after 30 minutes, but they start to get dimmer.

Sometimes I'll toss one to a jogger who isn't wearing any lights or reflectors, too.

Came as advertised. Shipped fast and came fast. These give off a bright orange light for 5-10 minutes and remain very visible for over 30 minutes. Happy with them.

These snaplights are extremely bright and visible from a great distance. I would definitely reccomend purchasing this item either for camping or emergency purposes.

Does exactly what is advertised, can you believe it? Not only that but it does so at a reasonable price. Easy to use and provides a very bright light source. At this price one can afford to keep them up to date as they do have an expiration date. I even had my wife play with one just to see how easy it is to use since it is so inexpensive. Could be a true life-saving device at a most affordable price. Stays very cool to the touch and with the attached stand has easy set-up in difficult terrain. I put four in each of the vehicles just in case.

Disappointed in this. This was marketed as an alternative to flares... It was just a bag of chem lights in the foil wrap.
The lights are fine, industrial grade orange color... No problems there. I was expecting little holders to go with them, as pictured... Nope. Not even in retail packaging...
Worst thing is I paid more for these as opposed to regular snap lights because there were supposed to be road flare alternatives... I won't be purchasing these again ... I will purchase the regular lights at half the price from other venders.

I wanted the brightest glow stick possible. This is the brightest I've ever been able to find.

My only issue with these is that there is no way to hook a lanyard or any thing to them really.
The little band at the top in the pictures is paper/foil and the wire is very malleable and not glued or attached in any other way than just the paper band. Maybe I'll be able to find some sort of container to put them in to connect to a lanyard.

This is the way to go for emergency road lighting. You do not have the problem of deteriorating road flares and no flames to worry about. this is a much safer item to use.
