Product Description

The Cyalume SnapLight is a red industrial grade chemical light stick measuring 6" long, for providing instant 360 degree illumination, that can be seen up to a mile away for up to 12 hours in optimal conditions. The SnapLight is waterproof, non-toxic, and non-flammable. To activate the light stick, bend, snap and shake the tube. The light stick has a hook and gate top, for hanging or attaching the light. Each light stick is individually foil-wrapped for protection from light and moisture, and has up to a five-year shelf life from date of manufacture.

The durable, waterproof, external body of the light stick is made from low density polyethylene (LDPE), and is phthalate free for safety. The internal illuminating chemical substance is non-toxic and non-flammable, and the components of the light stick are recyclable. The light stick floats in water and works best between 40 to 80 degrees F (4 to 27 degrees C), and although the light stick works at higher or lower temperatures, it is less effective in colder temperatures.

All sticks are tested at a temperature of 72 degrees F (22 degrees C) to determine the illumination duration. Each 10-degree C (50-degree F) increase or decrease in temperature doubles or halves the reaction rate, and therefore the brightness and duration. For example, the same light stick that emits approximately 30 lux (a unit that describes how much light is visible over a square meter) at 15 minutes after activation at 24 degrees C (75 degrees F) will be half as bright but glow twice as long at 14 degrees C (57 degrees F). At 34 degrees C (93 degrees F), the same light stick would be twice as bright, but glow half as long. Storage at elevated temperatures (above 120 degrees F or 49 degrees C) will decrease shelf life and start to soften the plastic tube, and increase the risk of a leak. Exposure to cold temperatures will not affect the light sticks if they are warmed above 40 degrees F (4.5 degrees C) before activation, unless they are frozen (which occurs at -15 to -20 degrees F, or -26 to -29 degrees C). Once light sticks have been frozen, they will still produce some light, but performance will not be as reliable. Humidity and atmospheric conditions do not affect the light sticks.

Light sticks are chemiluminescent substances in plastic tubes that provide hours of illumination in a number of safety, industrial, and military applications. Light sticks are waterproof, non-flammable, and non-sparking, which makes them useful in hazardous situations where sparks or flame could cause an explosion. Duration is determined by the chemistry of the formulation. Brightness is affected by temperature: the warmer the temperature, the brighter the light will appear. Viewing distance can be affected by temperature, moisture, and other elements. Exposure to direct sunlight can reduce shelf life and effectiveness.

Cyalume Technologies manufactures chemiluminescent products used for safety, industrial, and military applications. The company, founded in 1970 and headquartered in West Springfield, MA, makes products under ChemLight and SnapLight brands. ChemLight products meet military specifications, and the company meets ISO 9001 standards.

Having spent 32 years with the military, I'm quite familiar with "ChemLights" which is the military term for these 12-hour light sticks. I noted that one reviewer was less then happy with the illumination capabilities of the red ChemLights. Yes, if you're looking to illuminate a large area or even a two person tent in a safe and secure area, red is probably not the best choice in colors. On the other hand, if you're looking for a ChemLight which doesn't draw as much attention to your position and is more difficult for animals and humans to see, red is the preferred color. It's for up close and personal use such as map reading or marking a location without becoming a light house beacon. It also does not attract as many - if any - night time animal and insect visitors. If there's information to be considered in this review, it's suggested that selecting a color in ChemLights should include an assessment of situation, application and desired results.

Longer lasting than solar-power.
Longer lasting than crank-power.
Longer lasting than shake-power.
Longer lasting than battery-power.

Not as bright,
but you can leave this on when you nap,
and wake up in the light instead of in the dark.

Blue is the best for romance.
Yellow is the best for seeing.
Red preserves nite-vision and hides wrinkles.
When used as a bobber, green acts as a lure during night fishing.

Kids love playing with these in the pool at sunset.

Can be used as a foot-lamp when lowered on the 13" sold-seperate companion:Garmin 013-00052-00 Lanyard, Etrex

I wish I had these in the Boy Scouts.
I wish I had these in the war.

I might be spending too much time in the deep dark woods.

These came with the blue and white ones, came faster then I thought they would, have them all over the house, in my car and in my disaster and search and rescue kits, great items to have if you do not have flares for a car accident. Used the green ones on a unlit road during an accident I came upon great item to have to slow down traffic.

I bought a box of these and of the Green as well. On the first night I cracked one of each to test them around 7pm. Both lit up very fast. The red does put out enough light to read by but not for any significant distance. (The red wavelength is used by military in darkened conditions to provide light without giving away location. A good example is navy ships after sunset. It also doesn't mess with your night vision going from the light to dark.) The green stick was very bright and provided enough light to be able to see throughout my room and probably would stand out from quite a long ways away. Both of these are rated for 12 hours. I set them on my dresser and went to bed for the night, when I woke up at 530 the next morning both were still going strong and looked just as bright as when I had first started them. What shocked me was when I got home from work around 530pm the red one was still glowing. The green was completely out. I kept an eye on the red stick and it continued to hold a significant glow for 29 hours! I haven't tested a second one to see if it was a freak of science, or not because there is only 10 per box, but since they both did exactly as advertised, and then some this is a 5 out of 5.

First, shipping: Arrived withing 72 hours, intact, no damage to packaging.

Second, product: The red glow stick snapped on and lit immediately, achieving maximum brightness in less than thirty seconds. I found that while it is not good at illuminating areas larger than a foot or less, it is ideal for nighttime visibility. It was clearly visible from a fifty meter distance, while still maintaining a red hue. At further distances, just as visible, but less red. Maintained full illumination for ten hours before dimming. On arrival at home twelve hours after that, it was still glowing, though not nearly as brightly.

I am very pleased with this purchase, as it seems to be a good addition to my car's emergency kit. Also purchased green-colored SnapLights, same 12 hour duration. Will review that product after testing. Altogether, full marks for visibility, time-efficiency, and cost.

All the sticks work great and last longer than they say. Red, I think are better for "marking" things in the dark you want to be able to find again, green are for very soft light in camping situations for example, and yellow is the brightest for when you want more light or to mark an auto accident and warn other drivers. Good emergency marking and lighting.

The industrial grade snapsticks do what you want them to do. The RED sticks would be more for marking or as an "emergency flare" that isn't going to set things on fire. And of course kids love to play with them; these will last all night.

I used a couple of these during a moderate altitude camping night. The weather was 20 degrees below zero C. The light sticks burn with very dim light which is just sufficient for reading within 50 cm distance. Will not adequately illuminate a tent. However the surprising thing is that they burnt with the same intensity for more than 72 hours!. I suggest that you carry a battery operated LED torch along with the light sticks, if you are camping in cold weather.
