THE DECLINE BEGINS, October 17, 2004
This review is from: Cyan (Audio CD)
Coming off of "7 Separate Fools", one of 3 DOG NIGHT'S strongest releases and one of their best selling, it was a tragic chapter in their historic career that the followup, "Cyan" didn't maintain the momentum that the band had going.
In spite of a huge hit single in "Shambala", and a few solid moments on this release, there are enough disappointments to render this one at the top of the bottom tier of their discography. The band sounds stellar and Cyan kicks off with big promise with guitarist Mike Alsup's original called "Happy Song". Then immediately we get a throwaway that aborts the take-off. Alsup also contributes two other songs which are among the highlights, particularly the Christian song of yearning "(The Lord) In My Life". The Top 20 hit "Let Me Serenade You" is above average, but still perhaps one of the lesser 3DN singles and weak cut's like "Play Children Play" and "Lay Me Down Easy" wouldn't have made the cut for earlier classic releases. To top it off, this release is EXTREMELY short with only 9 songs clocking in at about 35 minutes. It's like the project was taken out of the oven too soon. Clearly, more care and concern for song selection could have elevated this one from good to great. The band's inner turmoil had sprouted by '73 and perhaps that contributed to the drop off.
It's worth noting that sonically this may be the best sounding of all the 3DN releases on CD. Some of the earlier releases sounded muddy, this one sounds like it came from the original masters.
If you're a fan, this one is worth having. But just barely.

One of their best and hardest Rockin, July 31, 2011

contrary to the other odd reviews who try to diagnose the album too much ,,, this happens to be one of my favorites.
no collection is complete without it. The bass playing is in the groove, the band is tight and Mike Allsop puts in some of his best guitar playing all over the album.

How can "Singer Man", "Play Children Play", and "Storybook Feeling", not be included in a "Best Of" Three Dog Night Album??? They are great songs and very popular every place I was in 1973!! I have all of their Greatest Hits and had to get this CD for these three songs; thankfully they are all on one album. S. W. Toledo, Ohio
