It's very simple: these are poorly designed speakers. The headphone jack has excessive hum and prickling with no input, and they are incredibly sensitive to cell phone signals. Avoid. They've lasted me maybe 4 years of low impact use, and now one of them is conking out, so I need to get another pair. Yay.

I had invested a lot of money in a speaker system that was so complex it could have filled a theatre for my HP computer. It was a bit of an overkill so I took the speakers and attached them to a TV when I bought a Dell computer. I was looking for some speakers that would be small and have a great quality. The 2.0 Desktop System fit the bill. I like the idea that you can turn off sound (I love silence, too.) easily on one of the speakers.

These speakers are so bad! We have had them for about 2 months now and they always have that grating interference/popping sound whenever we have a cell phone in the room. We have a 2nd computer with speakers nearby that never makes so much as a peep when cell phones are near it. Do not buy these! Invest a little bit more for ones with better shielding!!

...but that's about all I can say in favor of these speakers. I bought them because the internals on my laptop died a few years ago, and my old externals recently started working only on the left side. I'm getting a new laptop soon, and didn't want to spend a lot of money on speakers I would only be using for a few months, so I just grabbed the cheapest pair I could find. This is the only reason I can see anyone buying these speakers, because for long-term use they are terrible. Some albums in my music library sound okay but a little echoey on these speakers, but others have so much distortion that they are nearly unrecognizable. (Maybe this has to do with the levels on the original recording?) And forget trying to listen to something that wasn't mixed professionally, like a YouTube video--you'll be lucky if you can hear anything clearly.
One bright spot: as advertised, the speakers are quite small, taking up very little desktop space. The volume ranges from pin-drop to jet-engine, so that's good, I suppose. However, these factors are far outweighed by the fact that half of my music is intolerably warped on these speakers.
These speakers are acceptable to fix a temporary situation like mine, but if you're looking for a pair of speakers that will last years, you're better off spending a little more money on a product with consistently good audio quality.

These are super-cheap speakers, and they do exactly what they're supposed to do - provide basic sound for a rock-bottom price. If you're looking for high-quality you're in the wrong place.
