Book Description

Enormous efficiencies have been gained over the past twenty-five years as a result of the introduction of computers and telecommunications technologies. The use of these systems and networks translates into a major concentration and centralization of information resources, however, this consolidation creates a major vulnerability to a host of attacks and exploitations. Cyber Warfare and Cyber Terrorism reviews related problems, issues, and presentations of the newest research in this field. Cyber Warfare and Cyber Terrorism provides an overview with basic definitions of cyber terrorism and information warfare, along with recommendations on how to handle these attacks. It presents detailed discussion on primary target facilities, deliverables, external penetration, starting points for preparations against attacks, and planning security systems. The book gives a solid introduction to cyber warfare and cyber terrorism in the 21st Century. It is a must-have for information technology specialists and information security specialists who want a first hand briefing on developments related to cyber warfare and cyber terrorism attacks.

3.0 out of 5 stars overpriced, August 27, 2007
This review is from: Cyber Warfare and Cyber Terrorism (Premier Reference) (Hardcover)
The book is very overpriced at $165. But it does contain timely discussions of how cyber warfare might be conducted. Some chapters are at the high level of how cyber warface could be another form of actual warfare. But other chapters are really not about cyber warfare but about different types of malware or activities on the internet. To some extent, the book has been padded out, relative to its title.

For example, there is a chapter on steganography. "Steg". Explaining what it is and how to (try to) detect it. Technically quite accurate. Invariably, discussions about cyber warfar and terrorism mention steg. It's quite dramatic. But the reader should keep in mind that thus far, steg is one of these phenomena that is more conjectured than real. While certainly steg is possible, there have been relatively few cases of actual, non-trivial steg encoded messages or webpages. Sure, terrorists might be using it. But outside spy novels, how much so?

Another example are the mentions of phishing, interspersed through various chapters. By no stretch of the imagination can this be construed as cyber warfare or terrorism. Phishing is a scam for monetary gain. The way the book includes this is by suggesting that terrorists could finance themselves via phishing. Again, this is possible. But also a stretch.
