5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVED this game, January 11, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: CyberMage (CD-ROM)
There were four computer games that I absolutely loved. Might & Magic, World of Xeen (both parts), Ultima: Quest of the Avatar, Space Quest IV and Cybermage! Cybermage in particular held a soft spot for me. What a treat it is to see it up on Amazon?!?! Like the previous reviewer said, it's hell loading this one into any modern machine and get it to work properly. It worked out of DOS in the older versions, and the machines now are so fast, you have to slow the processing considerably.

About the game... it's a first person 'shooter'. The game takes place somce 50 years or so in the future, and you're a sort of hybrid human/android/robot being, trying to bring an end to these corporations that make products that turn people into just that. The "Darklight" is the mysterious chrystal that gives you magical powers that vary as the game goes by. Basically, if you get hit by one of those powers, like the 'rings of death' as I called them, or fire-balls, and then 'Nova', the most powerful to name a few, you can then use those weapons. Anyways, those companies were corrupt and you had to fight them and several other corporate and small rebel groups.

What's so fascinating about this game is that at the time, it was so much more interactive. This came out it about 1994-1995. You had to infiltrate a futuristic police station & drive a police 'hover' car. You could also drive a tank, and it was funny watching the character run over people with it. And there were even some creepy scenes in the game, as you made your initial escape through the city in these caverns, which had fast humanoid beasts that would just seemingly come out of nowhere. And who could forget the dozens and dozens of those odd little people that you could release in the caverns? You go to a warzone, a monastary, corporate buildings, a barbaric futuristic coliseum and even a brothel, which was fascinating to say the least!

Anyways, I loved this game. In fact, I want to play it right now! Hopefully some of these game companies will do the conversion and make some of these great older games available for everyone to play. There's something to be said about the simple storylines and game-play of a lot of these games that would be great today.

4.0 out of 5 stars More than one thing done well, January 2, 2007

This review is from: CyberMage (CD-ROM)
This is a great game. Its old and you will probably go through several levels of hell to get it working on a modern machine. However, I played it when it was relatively new and it rocked my world.
It is a FPS that begins with standard play for the genre. That changes very quickly and it starts to play like an RPG without a character sheet. The well developed storyline (rare then and now in the FPS world) gradually changes the game into a comic book superpower (mage-like even) shooter. Guns still work, but the enemies you start facing require that you use your newfound powers. The items/weapons/armor/powers are all quite varied and unique. I found myself relishing each new 'tool' at my disposal. You even gain access to a machine-gun equipped police hovercar at one point...and the interface for it was done well!
Most games that try to do more than one thing well fail at all of them. This game was a rare success in that vein.
Only 2 complaints. 1. there are a few minor bugs...most games have more and I was able to load a recent game and work around them. 2. The last portion of the game (after gaining the big powers) is too short. For all the beautifully executed leadup, it needed to be more satisfying. I replayed the last sections several times just so I could fiddle around with my new powers more.
If you can get this game to run on your system, you won't be dissapointed. The single best combination of FPS and RPG ever created. I've played ALOT of games; its that good.
