I have used APC UPS backups exclusively. I was surprised like many people when one of my powerful APC backups would not run my Dell Studio XPS 9000 computer. When I called Dell about the problem, they were surprised and couldn't really help. When I talked to APC support, they knew all about the problem. They said I needed a backup that would produce a real sine wave because of the requirements of the power supply that was included with the Dell computer.

The APC person told me what APC unit would solve my issue. However, the unit was pretty expensive, and from reading the reviews, the unit was super noisy all of the time. I ended up ordering the CyberPower PP1100SW because it was cheaper. This unit actually works and is quiet. While the unit has a fan, the fan only turns on when there is a power loss. Under normal use, the unit makes no noise. If there is a quick brown out, my Dell keeps running and the unit stays quiet. If there is a power loss, after a few moments, only then does the fan turn on. This is all fine since the goal at that point is to run the machine long enough to get everything shut down properly.

If you are worried about noise and price, this is the unit to get! APC needs to get their act together and make their units quiet and reduce the price.

Very pleased with the unit and technical support. CyberPower is pleasure to deal with. Ordered the unit to have pure sineware power. The first unit arrived with the power plug bent too badly due to bad factory packaging. The Amazon.com shipped a replacement unit promtly and scheduled UPS pickup for the bad one. The second unit had difficulty with USB communication following wake up after sleep mode on Windows 7 64-bit. Only power down/up would help. I submitted the technical support request; it was promptly responded to. I called the technical support agent, who agent sent an updated version of software.

I needed a pure sinewave UPS for my new speed-demon Dell Studio XPS 9000, which won't work with older non-sinewave UPS systems. Many of the new systems use a different power factor power supply and require the new style UPS. This one works great, and the price is excellent. I used to swear by APC UPS's, but have had less success in recent years. The APC replacement batteries are horribly expensive, whereas the CyberPower uses generic batteries that you can get at any battery store for less than half the price of an APC battery. Since most batteries need to be replaced every few years, it makes the CyberPower an easy thing to recommend. I now have 3 systems running on CyberPower units, and am impressed with the quality and price point.
